View: De Zerbi wrong with Tottenham win streak claim as Pochettino feat lays benchmark

Roberto De Zerbi has claimed Tottenham Hotspur can win five Premier League matches in a row.

Speaking after drawing versus Brighton, the Spurs manager stated, “This team is able to win five games in a row.” However, the Italian’s word will only be viewed as merely a hollow motivation tactic based on this season’s form.

Things have gone dramatically wrong in N17, with the officials in North London making countless errors after error, leading the Lilywhites into the relegation battle.

As Tottenham manager, De Zerbi will look to increase spirits, and doing so through his comments in the dressing room and media is one way to go about it.

But his latest claim about Tottenham’s remaining games is a feat not seen in North London since the days of Mauricio Pochettino.

When did Tottenham last win five Premier League games in a row?

Any Tottenham fan this season will tell you that there is little confidence Spurs can win one match, let alone go on a five-game streak.

It is a feat not often achieved in the Premier League and, for the Lilywhites, one not completed since the days of Pochettino.

The 2018-2019 campaign is the last time the Lilywhites faithful have been able to celebrate victories five times on the trot.

This came during December, with Pochettino’s side defeating Southampton, Leicester, Burnley, Everton and Bournemouth.

During that stretch of games, the N17 outfit did face a myriad of sides, with both Southampton and Burnley within the bottom four at the time of the fixture. While Leicester, Everton and Bournemouth were in the top 9.

That run of matches saw Tottenham average 3.4 goals per game while conceding just 0.6 per game. It is form that the Lilywhites could desperately do with right now.

This season, Spurs would have to improve drastically in both categories. In the Premier League, they average just 1.2 goals per match and 1.6 conceded per match.

When did Tottenham last win five games in a row?

While it has been a while since Tottenham won five Premier League matches in a row. They have more recently done so in all competitions.

In fact, it was last season when Ange Postecoglou managed this feat, beating Coventry, Brentford, Qarabag, Manchester United and Ferencvaros.

Over that period, Postecoglou’s outfit averaged 2.6 goals scored per game, and conceding 0.6 per game

However, only two of those matches came in the Premier League.

Nonetheless, both instances showcase how difficult a five-match win streak can be, and truthfully, De Zerbi’s words may be nothing more than wishful thinking.

Although De Zerbi has shown early signs he could keep Tottenham up.
