Championship run-in: Birmingham sweating over Bright Osayi-Samuel fitness update

Bright Osayi-Samuel is facing a late fitness test as Birmingham City prepare for a crucial week in the Championship, Soccernet.ng reports.

The right-back, who has started the club’s last three league matches, picked up a knock during Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Hull City. He was forced off after just 50 minutes, raising concerns about his availability for the games ahead.

Birmingham manager Chris Davies has now provided an update, suggesting the issue may not be serious.

“It was a dead leg,” Davies said. “I think it seized up at half-time and he tried to go on but he couldn’t. I thought Ethan (Laird) came in really well.

“I’m presuming Bright will be OK but we’ll have to see.”

The timing is important. Birmingham are set to play two home matches in quick succession at St Andrew’s, first against Preston North End and then Bristol City. With only a single point separating the three sides in the table, these games could shape where Birmingham finish this season.

Osayi-Samuel’s recent form has made him an important part of the team. After a mixed campaign following his move from Fenerbahce last summer, he has worked his way back into the starting line-up at right-back.

He also impressed in Birmingham’s recent 2-0 win over Wrexham, in what was widely seen as one of his best performances of the season.

Why Bright Osayi-Samuel's fitness matters to Birmingham

Osayi-Samuel has quietly become a reliable figure for both club and country this season. While he is not known for goals or assists, his main job is to defend well and keep the team organised at the back.

In the Championship, he has made 24 appearances, including 17 starts, and played over 1,300 minutes. His passing has been steady, with an accuracy of 82.9%, and he has contributed strongly in defence with interceptions and recoveries.

Beyond club football, the Nigerian international also played a key role for the Nigeria national football team during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. He featured in six matches and helped the team secure a third-place finish, delivering disciplined performances in defence.

That consistency is why Birmingham will be keen to have him fit for the run-in. If he is unable to start, Ethan Laird is expected to step in. Davies has already hinted at his confidence in Laird after his performance against Hull.

Still, Osayi-Samuel’s presence offers balance and experience, especially in tight games where defensive focus is key.

Birmingham, though, are waiting on his recovery. The early signs are positive, but as Davies made clear, the final decision will depend on how the player responds before kick-off.
