Everton’s pursuit of Mario Gila has received more encouragement as AC Milan could be out of the race for the Lazio defender already.

The Blues will need plenty of reinforcements along their backline in the next transfer window.

Seamus Coleman and Michael Keane are currently set to end their spells at the Merseyside club, with their contracts expiring after this season.

Additionally, Nathan Patterson and Adam Aznou have failed to feature regularly under David Moyes, making their exits likely as well.

A busy transfer window for Everton looks almost certain, with Gila already linked as an early option.

Why is AC Milan’s move for Mario Gila hard to achieve?

European football will provide Everton with an added incentive when chasing their summer targets, and the prospect of more income from those matches could increase their spending power.

Defence and attack are two of the biggest priorities for Moyes, and the arrival of 25-year-old Gila could kickstart the revamp in L3.

Interest from other clubs could, of course, negatively impact the Blues’ interest, but it looks like AC Milan are already facing a tough negotiation.

According to Tuttomercatoweb, while Gila is a top target for AC Milan, the asking price from Lazio of at least £26million makes the deal a “difficult target to achieve”.

That will be excellent news to officials at Hill Dickinson Stadium, who will welcome any difficulties from other interested parties in the race for the Spaniard.

Gila will not be extending his deal at Lazio, opening the possibility of a sale, with Bournemouth, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur remaining as Everton’s rivals for this deal.

Could Everton use Gila’s contract saga to their advantage?

Lazio will not want to miss out on getting a fee for Gila, with his current deal set to expire in June 2027.

This upcoming summer window and the next winter window are the last opportunities for the Rome-based club to get a fee, with his market value only going to drop by next winter.

While the Serie A club are said to have a hardline stance on their valuation of the defender, there could at least be room to negotiate a more optimal deal.

Lazio could accept a transfer that protects their valuation but also allows a lower base fee from Everton. This would include the likes of add-ons or clauses.

However, with plenty of suitors available, the Toffees may have to settle for paying what Lazio requests.
