Everton could owe former manager Ronald Koeman if they can get a January target over the line.

Koeman took charge of Everton between 2016 and 2017, guiding the Blues to a seventh-place finish in his first campaign in charge.

However, his second season was dismal, and he was sacked in October 2017, with the Toffees sitting in the relegation zone.

Koeman could prove vital if his former side are to sign a four-time Premier League winner this month.

Why Everton could sign Nathan Ake this month after Koeman talks

Everton were reportedly chasing Nathan Ake in the summer, and they could revive their interest in January as David Moyes looks to firm up his backline.

Ake has admitted that he wants to be playing regularly, after Koeman told him that he needs to be if he is to get into the Netherlands squad for the World Cup.

The Manchester City ace revealed the talks after the draw with Sunderland, saying: “He [Koeman] has said to me a few times actually that he wants me to play more and sometimes it is difficult to call me up if I don’t play a lot, that’s obvious.

Why do Everton need to sign Ake?

Moyes has some great options in his defence, with the likes of Jarrad Branthwaite, Michael Keane and James Tarkowski starring on Merseyside in recent years.

However, his side have been hit by significant injury concerns this season, with the former missing every single game so far.

If Keane gets injured, then Jake O’Brien, who has been playing at right-back, will need to be dragged back into his natural role, leaving a gaping hole in the backline, with Seamus Coleman not fit enough and Nathan Patterson not trusted.

The Blues need more depth in their ranks, especially in the back four, and Ake would be a perfect option, given that he is not playing as much as he would like.

While he would likely relegate Keane to the bench, given his quality, Moyes would have less of a headache if he was brought to the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The move could be perfect for both parties, the Toffees need a defender, and the 30-year-old needs to play, if he is to travel to the summer tournament with his nation.

Whether City would be willing to lose him remains to be seen, but it would be mutually beneficial for the L4 outfit and the player.
