Dwight McNeil has forced his way into contention for a regular starting place at Everton.

McNeil was disregarded by many observers earlier in the season, with reports that he could have left the Hill Dickinson Stadium in the winter transfer window.

However, David Moyes chose to keep him at Everton, and he has since proved the Scotsman right with his recent performances.

His latest showing against Newcastle has surely cemented a starting spot for the clash with Burnley on 3 March.

What was so impressive about McNeil’s performance vs Newcastle?

McNeil was solid offensively as he attempted four shots, with two on target and one blocked by an opposition player, per Sofascore.

He completed both of the dribbles that he attempted, and had an 82 per cent pass accuracy, misplacing just three of his 17 passes.

The most impressive aspect of his performance against the Magpies was his defensive work, as he made a total of seven contributions at the back.

The 26-year-old made three clearances and four recoveries, as well as winning all four tackles that he attempted for a 100 per cent success rate.

He also won seven of the 13 ground duels that he contested in the contest.

Why McNeil should start for Everton against Burnley

If the Blues are to qualify for Europe at the end of the campaign, they need their attackers to help at the back.

McNeil showed that he is willing to put in the defensive work in the victory against Eddie Howe’s side, and that was crucial to the result that the Toffees ended up securing.

Moyes has been very clear with what he requires from his wingers, and the willingness to help out on the other side of the ball is one of his demands.

The 10-cap England under-21 international has surely made his mark on his manager with his latest showing, and he should be rewarded for that with a start against the Clarets.

Scott Parker’s side are in desperate need of a victory, as they try desperately to avoid relegation, so they will surely try to attack a lot.

McNeil could be vital with his work rate and willingness to do what is required to help his team at the back.
