David Moyes has a big task on his hands to mastermind a win for Everton against Arsenal this Saturday, but it can be done.

The Toffees travel to North London, where they will take on the Gunners in a Premier League match where the hosts really need to win to keep their hopes of winning the title strong.

Moyes has lauded Mikel Arteta for the work he’s done with Arsenal this season, who look on track to win the Premier League.

However, Everton have their own ambitions, and the Blues will be out for the upset of the weekend come matchday.

David Moyes to deploy the five-back formation

Jarrad Branthwaite is fit for Everton after a new update given by Moyes, which means he has the entirety of his usual backline primed for use against Arsenal.

For the majority of the season, the Toffees boss has stuck to his trust 4-2-3-1 formation all season, but he would be wise to switch to a back five against the Gunners.

As seen in the graphic below, this is how the Toffees can set up in transition to hit Arsenal on the counterattack.

More importantly, Everton can deploy a low block, something which Arsenal have struggled against at times this campaign, as the Gunners will have extra fatigue from their Champions League game midweek.

This means that Arteta’s side are going to have to do a lot more running than the Toffees, which could open up space for Everton to exploit.

These numbers show Mikel Arteta can’t hand the five-back setup

It’s easier said than done, but there’s no reason why the Blues can’t take at least a point back to Merseyside from this weekend’s game.

It’s been done by the likes of Wolves and Nottingham Forest this season, but there’s plenty of data for Moyes to digest on how to break Arsenal’s will to win.

Sunderland gained a point at home in the league against Arsenal, as Crystal Palace held the Gunners to a 1-1 draw over 90 minutes in the Carabao Cup.

Wolves picked up a point at home, and if not for a last-gasp Arsenal winner, would have done the same in their away fixture at the Emirates Stadium earlier this season, using a five-at-the-back formation both times.

They just drew 1-1 midweek to Bayern Leverkusen’s five-at-the-back setup, while Manchester United’s altered variation of the back five got them three points on their travels to the Emirates Stadium.

Moyes knows what needs to be done.
