Michael Keane may breathe a sigh of relief at Everton.

The former Burnley defender is out of contract at the Hill Dickinson Stadium in the summer, and there has been no update on potential terms.

The Blues were linked with Estoril centre-back Kevin Boma in the winter transfer window, but a move did not materialise.

They are not expected to immediately return for the 23-year-old as their interest has dwindled after he suffered a season-ending injury, per Portuguese outlet Record.

Keane could now have a repreive for his Everton career, after the latest update on Boma’s future from Portugal.

Why Keane decision is vital for Everton

If Everton are not going to return for the defender, then that could force them to keep Keane around for the foreseeable future.

He has proven himself as a capable option when stepping in for Jarrad Branthwaite, who was injured for the majority of this season, and surely a new contract would cost less than a potential new addition.

Any signing from abroad, like someone from Liga Portugal, would have to learn how to cope with the pace and physicality of the Premier League, something the veteran already knows all about.

Why keeping Keane is the best option for Everton

Keeping the 33-year-old for an extra season may be the best move for David Moyes’ side, as his experience and leadership could be vital if they qualify for Europe.

The chance to sign Boma will still be there, the following season, as his contract is due to expire in the summer of 2027.

So, a short-term deal for Keane, with the Togo star lined up as a replacement in the long-term, makes perfect sense for all parties.

The Friedkin Group can save money by getting him in on a free transfer, which they could use on other areas of the squad in L3 this summer, to truly bolster the squad for a campaign fighting on more fronts than usual.

They will ultimately need to move on from the 12-cap England ace eventually, but it may not be the right time at the end of the season, especially if they are not fully convinced on Boma’s recovery as the report suggests.
