View: Rangers youth pathway now open after Rohl influence becomes clear in Under-19's clash

Rangers look to be taking their youth development much more seriously under Danny Rohl’s leadership.

The Gers have been criticised for the lack of young talent that have broken through into the Ibrox first-team in recent years.

However, it appears that Rohl, the 49ers Enterprises group and Andrew Cavenagh are making a concerted effort to improve the pathway.

The ownership group have committed to overhauling the academy, and the former Sheffield Wednesday manager is clearly already having an influence.

Under-19s clash shows how Rohl is helping Rangers youth

The Rangers Review reported on the Under-19s’ 1-1 draw with Queen’s Park in the Glasgow Cup, and they claimed that the young Gers looked similar to Rohl’s side in both defence and attack.

They stated that Malky Thomson‘s side were in control in possession, with passing lanes primarily in the middle of the pitch, before they secured a bonus point in the 4-2 penalty shootout win.

Meanwhile, out of possession, the Under-19s adopted the assertive, high-pressing approach that has become synonymous with the senior team in recent months.

Why Rohl influence can help bridge the gap

With the likes of Josh Gentles and Kyle Glasgow looking to eventually make the step up, they will now be confident that it is possible.

Under previous regimes, that would not have been the case, as Ross McCausland is the only academy graduate to play significant minutes for the Gers recently.

Bailey Rice was signed for £500,000 from Motherwell, and he struggled to make it in the senior ranks in Govan, making 16 total appearances.

However, with Rohl at the helm and the academy sides already playing a similar style to his side, it should make the transition easier and open up the pathway for a lot more top talent to actually make it at Auchenhowie.

They should be ready to slot into the team when they are called upon to play, and therefore, stand a better chance of making it, rather than fading into obscurity after a brief spell in the limelight.

Of course, the next step is managing the media and the expectations that come with playing for the 55-time champions, but that cannot be taught on the pitch.
