View: Rohl to convince ex-player again, Rangers may have upper-hand to sign free agent

Rangers should use Danny Rohl’s influence to sign Sheffield Wednesday defender Max Lowe in the upcoming transfer window.

The 28-year-old joined the Owls from Sheffield United in 2024 and was a key player for the German last season.

As things stand, the left-back’s current contract at Hillsborough expires June, and with the EFL Championship outfit destined for relegation, the Englishman may be looking for a move elsewhere.

Rohl wanted Lowe in the winter transfer window, and the former Sheffield Wednesday boss could potentially convince the defender to make the switch to Ibrox in the coming months.

🚨 RANGERS TRANSFER UPDATE 🚨

The latest breaking news on signings, departures, and Danny Röhl’s primary targets.

Max Lowe in awe of Rangers manager Danny Rohl

Lowe’s respect for Rohl should be evident from his decision to move between city rivals to play for the 36-year-old head coach.

The English left-back has admitted he was a bit hesitant to join Sheffield Wednesday from Sheffield United because of the rivalry, but the German manager convinced him to do so.

As soon as the defender spoke with Rohl, he was surprised by the level of detail the head coach went into.

The Ibrox hierarchy made enquiries for Lowe in January, and they may now have the upper hand to sign him as a free agent due to the former Sheffield Wednesday boss’ influence.

Speaking to the Daily Record on 11 March, Lowe said, “I was a bit hesitant to join at first, obviously, as I was with Blades, and it would mean crossing to the other side of the city. But once I spoke with Danny, my mind was made up.

“He did a whole analysis on how I play, how I’d fit within the team structure and how he wanted us to play. I’ll be honest, I’ve not had many meetings with managers that are that intense and who bring that level of detail to the table. Actually, I was a bit in awe at how good he was. Tactically, he’s world-class.”

Danny Rohl has one transfer priority at Ibrox

Rohl will be keen to bolster his defence in the summer, with several players set to depart as things stand.

James Tavernier’s contract may not be extended at Rangers beyond this season and the likes of Max Aarons, Nasser Djiga, Derek Cornelius and Jayden Meghoma will return to their parent clubs soon.

While Tuur Rommens looks to be a brilliant addition to the Gers’ squad, they will undoubtedly need to add more depth to their backline soon.

Lowe has been on the sidelines due to an injury in recent weeks and the versatile defender, who can also play as a centre-back, could potentially kickstart his career at Ibrox after the Owls’ struggles.
