View: Tottenham must avoid Frank-like error as favourite emerges for job

Roberto De Zerbi is looking increasingly likely to be the next Tottenham Hotspur manager, and it could be a huge error.

Igor Tudor’s sack at Spurs seems to be imminent, with the Croatian still having yet to win a Premier League game in charge of the North Londoners.

Their latest defeat at home to Nottingham Forest has massively increased their chances of relegation, with a change in the dugout expected in order to fight back against that ahead of the final seven games of the season.

Many believed that the North Londoners would turn to yet another interim manager to see them through to the end of the season.

However, with De Zerbi now the favourite for the Tottenham job, that seems not to be the case, and it may not be a good thing.

Roberto De Zerbi would be all too similar to Thomas Frank

Thomas Frank arrived at Tottenham with plenty of expectations, given the job he had done with Brentford over the seven years he was with them.

He took charge of over 300 games and averaged 1.51 points per game, which was a remarkable record given the tools he had at his disposal.

But his move to Spurs failed, as showcased by the fact that he averaged just 1.29 points per game, and he was dismissed as soon as it became apparent that Tottenham were set for a relegation battle.

But his career is worrying similar to De Zerbi’s, in the sense that they both saw their reputations grow after doing an excellent job at a club with low expectations, with De Zerbi having also averaged 1.51 points per game at Brighton.

However, the level of expectations at Tottenham are much, much higher than at Brentford or Brighton, and it’s likely that De Zerbi would fail to live up to that just like Frank did.

How do Tottenham move forward after Igor Tudor?

Spurs need to do whatever it takes to stay in the Premier League this season. After that, there are decisions to be made.

They need a manager who has experience working for a big club with high demands, which is something that many of the recent failed managers have failed to provide.

Only then will things start to improve.
