Wenham backs 'magical' Tottenham star to become an icon after Brighton scenes

Xavi Simons may have finally arrived as a Tottenham Hotspur player.

The Dutchman was signed for big money from RB Leipzig last summer, but he has failed to produce many moments of quality this season.

However, he notched a stunning goal and an assist in the 2-2 draw with Brighton, as Roberto De Zerbi‘s side were denied all three points at the death on 18 April.

It was an encouraging performance from the 22-year-old after months of struggling at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tottenham need Simons to perform like that consistently if they are to have any chance of maintaining their place in the Premier League.

Why Simons can be an icon at Tottenham

Simons has been criticised by sections of Tottenham fans for his post-game antics, but John Wenham was blown away by his performance in the game.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, he said: “We saw the emergence of Xavi Simons as a real top-level player for Tottenham, and he can be a focal point and an icon of this team moving forward.

“He inherited Son’s number seven shirt, and we’ve seen glimpses, but this was an all-around performance where he was just a creative magician throughout.

“He got the assist for the first goal with a fantastically weighted ball, then his goal was just magical, I can’t remember celebrations like that at the South stand for such a long period of time.

“It was a magical moment for a magical player, which gives us hope.”

How Simons can prove to be worth every penny

Tottenham will pray that the former RB Leipzig man has finally arrived, because they need much more from him in the final few weeks.

He has five goals and cost £51million, which means he scores at a rate of £10.2million per goal at the moment.

That is not a worthwhile investment based on those figures, but if he can step up in the final few weeks and secure Spurs’ top-flight status, it may be worth every penny.

Then he can kick on next season with the Lilywhites still in the elite division and become a true star, like he was supposed to be in this campaign, after his transfer to the North London side.
