When Celtic’s new ‘real goal threat’ will undergo Parkhead medical as transfer clause emerges

Celtic have reportedly agreed a deal to sign Borussia Monchengladbach striker Tomas Cvancara on loan.

The news will come as huge relief for Martin O’Neill and fans of the Bhoys, with Celtic having missed out on several striker targets this month.

The Northern Irishman has been very outspoken about the need for new arrivals at Parkhead in the coming days, and will be pleased to finally see one arrive.

Celtic signed Julian Araujo on loan from Bournemouth at the start of the window, but the right-back has not solved the issues going forward.

And after Hearts confirmed that Lawrence Shankland is set to miss much of the remaining season, there is particular pressure on decision-makers not to deny the chance to make up ground on the league leaders.

Celtic reach agreement to sign Tomas Cvancara

It emerged on Tuesday evening that Celtic, after missing out on moves for several striking options, have finally sealed a deal to sign a striker.

Cvancara, 25, spent the first half of the season on loan at Super Lig club Antalyaspor, where he scored two goals in 13 appearances across all competitions.

But the forward has great pedigree elsewhere, and has already featured on eight occasions for the Czechia international team.

Kicker have reported that Cvancara is set to undergo his Celtic medical on Wednesday, ahead of an initial loan until the end of the season.

There is also an option to buy included in the contract, which will be worth around £7million at the end of the campaign.

Cvancara is a ‘real goal threat’

Cvancara moved between clubs at quite an extraordinary rate in the early years of his career, but he eventually caught the eye with 18 months at Sparta Prague.

The 2021-22 season saw the striker net 18 goals across all competitions, encouraging the Czech side to buy him in January 2022.

The following season saw him score 15 goals and provide five assists in just 30 games, with Gladbach signing him for around £9.5m.

Cvancara has not reached the same levels in the Bundesliga, but sporting director Roland Virkus was very excited about him upon his arrival in 2023.

“Tomas is a real goal threat with plenty of pace,” he said. “He’s still young, but has been playing professionally for several years and broke into the Czech Republic national team this season.”

Celtic will hope a move abroad could revitalise Cvancara, and push him towards the numbers he has shown previously.
