WSL returns: Everything fans need to know as Tottenham Women plot European charge

Tottenham Hotspur Women are plotting a European charge as the Women’s Super League returns this weekend.

The WSL was put on hold last month due to the ongoing international break, while multiple sides competed in the Champions League knockouts.

And it is that exact competition that Spurs are aiming to reach come May, with Martin Ho’s side sitting fifth in the standings ahead of the season’s crunch point.

Tottenham beat Aston Villa 7-3 last time out in the league, before they secured an FA Cup quarter-final spot via a penalty shootout win against London City.

With domestic action returning on Sunday as the Lilywhites face Everton, Tottenham Hotspur News takes a look at everything fans should know.

European charge continues following WSL return

Ahead of the pause, Spurs reignited their push for a top-three finish in emphatic fashion, as they dismantled Aston Villa 7-3 at Villa Park.

Starting on the front foot, Ho’s side were rewarded inside 10 minutes as Signe Gaupset netted her first goal for the club. And despite the quick response from the hosts, with Kirsty Hanson equalising for Villa, Tottenham regained control as quickly as they lost it.

Skipper Bethany England’s deflected effort found the back of the net in the 19th minute, before Olivia Holdt increased the deficit.

Cathinka Tandberg would net twice in the second half, while goals from Maika Hamano and Ellie Roebuck secured a sensational 7-3 victory on the road.

After the break, Ho’s side sit level on points with fourth-placed Arsenal, albeit having played more games.

Though, a Chmapions League place does remain in sight.

Following a home clash against eighth-placed Everton upon the league’s return, Spurs travel to runaway leaders Manchester City and North London rivals Arsenal within the space of a week, before they welcome Manchester United to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium at the end of April.

Sitting fifth in the standings, a Champions League place could be deemed ambitious for Tottenham, but they have left themselves within the race ahead of a crucial run of fixtures following the league’s return – indicative of just how much Tottenham Women have continued to improve under Ho’s guidance.

Cup ambitions coincide with European push

During the crucial run of fixtures mentioned, Spurs’ FA Cup future will also be put on the line.

Following the dramatic victory against London City last month, Tottenham were drawn against Chelsea in the quarter-finals of the iconic competition.

The London rivals will go head-to-head at Kingsmeadow on 5 April.

In their most recent league outing, Chelsea got the better of Spurs thanks to goals from Keira Walsh and Alyssa Thompson.

Though, as always in the cup, anything can happen. Alongside their European ambitions, Tottenham will be looking to mount a serious challenge for silverware and further their push to become one of the WSL’s top sides.
