Arthur Okonkwo: Super Eagles prospect’s future in the spotlight despite Wrexham heroics

Super Eagles prospective goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo's future currently hangs in the balance at Wrexham, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 24-year-old shot-stopper joined the Red Dragons from Arsenal in 2024 and helped them gain promotion to the English Championship in his first season.

Now in the Championship, the Arsenal-trained goalkeeper has proven that he can hold his own. He has featured in 39 games with ten clean sheets. With him between the sticks, the club could well achieve a Premier League berth with only three games left to play.

Regarding his international future, Okonkwo recently switched allegiances from England to Nigeria, which means he could be called up for Nigeria's friendly matches in June.

However, his future at Wrexham appears to be hanging in the balance. There is even the possibility that he could leave the club within the next year.

When Arthur Okonkwo joined Wrexham, he signed a three-year deal. He is now in his second year. As it stands, his contract will expire in 15 months—essentially at the end of next season.

Most clubs wishing to retain their star players begin negotiating contract extensions within two years of expiration.

However, there has been no news to that effect from Wrexham’s end, which suggests the former Arsenal man may be looking to run out his contract and move to another club. Alternatively, it could be that the club plans to move on from him and prefers to let his contract expire.

If the situation continues, Okonkwo will be free to begin negotiations with other clubs starting next January.

Nonetheless, he remains focused on helping Wrexham gain promotion to the English top flight.
