Barcelona consider shock move for Chelsea forward as Robert Lewandowski replacement

Barcelona are in the market for a new striker, with it becoming increasingly likely that one of their current number nines will leave in the summer. Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres have both been heavily linked with moves away, but at this stage, the former is still most likely to depart, by way of his contract running out in June.

Julian Alvarez remains Barcelona’s leading target, but it is becoming increasingly clear that doing a deal with Atletico Madrid will be incredibly difficult. Low-cost options are being considered too, but also being looked at is something in the middle, which is where Joao Pedro could come in.

According to Simon Phillips (via CaughtOffside), Barcelona are seriously interested in Pedro, who has impressed during his first season at Chelsea. 18 goals and six assists across all competitions speaks for itself, and he would have many chances to improve on those numbers if he does end up at the Spotify Camp Nou.

Chelsea may be unwilling to consider letting Pedro leave 12 months after he joined from Brighton, but even so, a deal would likely be possible for under €100m, which is the budget that Barcelona have set themselves for a new number nine. If it does get done, it could be a shrewd piece of business for a player that is getting better and better, and at 24, he will only continue to  rise.

Pedro’s profile is something for Barcelona to consider

Pedro would be a good fit for Barcelona, although the fact that he is not an out-and-out striker could be a concern for sporting director Deco and co. Nevertheless, he would be able to effectively link up with the likes of Fermin Lopez, Lamine Yamal and Raphinha, which would be an exciting prospect for supporters.

For now, Barcelona’s interest in Pedro is only in its infancy, but it remains to be seen whether it continues to get more serious as the summer draws nearer.
