Manchester City move to shield star player amid Real Madrid interest

Real Madrid are planning to sign a new midfielder this summer, and one of the players they’ve been linked to is Rodri Hernandez. Bernabeu officials have long admired the Manchester City and Spain man, although it does appear unlikely that he will end up back in the Spanish capital in 2026.

Presently, Real Madrid are considering other options in their bid to strengthen their midfield options, and now, he could be poised to move even further away from a return to Spanish shores as Man City step up their own plans to keep him in Manchester.

Fabrizio Romano has reported that Man City have tabled a contract offer to the 29-year-old midfielder. Interestingly, he also noted that Real Madrid are still interested in him, despite numerous reports in the last few weeks stating otherwise.

At this stage, Rodri has not given any indication either way as to where he wants to be playing his football in the future. He is happy at Man City, but he has already publicly spoken on the allure of Real Madrid, which could have an impact on whether he chooses to sign a new contract.

Rodri could look for a new challenge back in La Liga

It has been seven years since Rodri swapped Atletico Madrid for Man City, and in that period, he has won countless Premier League titles, the Champions League and even a Ballon d’Or. He could feel that he’s done everything possible during his time at the Etihad Stadium, so there may well be thoughts of a new challenge.

The opportunity to play for Real Madrid does not come around every day, so if it does present itself to Rodri, he may grab it. However, it’s worth noting that it may not happen until 2027 when his current deal expires, given that Romano has reported that Man City have no plans to accept a reduced fee this summer even if their contract proposal is rejected.
