Benjamin Nygren PFA Award shortlist snub could come to Celtic’s benefit this transfer window

Benjamin Nygren was surprisingly snubbed from the PFA Player of the Year Award shortlist when it was released on Monday.

While Celtic have had one of their worst campaigns in recent memory, the Swede has been one of the few highlights.

So far this season, he has scored 15 goals in the Scottish Premiership on top of five assists in 34 matches.

As a result, Celtic remain title contenders and are arguably the favourites after Rangers’ defeat to Motherwell on the weekend.

However, the club could make this bizarre snub work to their benefit as Celtic prepare for the upcoming transfer window.

Given his form for Celtic, it is no surprise that Nygren has been linked away.

The midfielder has been one of the standout players in what is a very weak Celtic team.

If the Hoops are to lift the double this season, much of it will be thanks to Nygren’s brilliance, and the club cannot afford to really lose him.

However, it appears that the 24-year-old may have gone under the radar this season, and the PFA snub is evidence of this.

As a result, this could potentially help the club keep hold of the Swede this summer.

If Nygren had won the award, it would have no doubt increased the interest in the midfielder, especially if Celtic went on to win the division.

Therefore, hopefully, by him not being shortlisted altogether, it will decrease interest, something that would no doubt work in the club’s favour.

What is Nygren’s stance on a summer departure?

Football Insider has exclusively revealed that Nygren has his heart set on a move to the Premier League.

The midfielder views it as a natural next step in his career, with clubs in the English top-flight interested in a swoop.

The Bhoys are under “no pressure” to sell the 24-year-old this summer, with their financial situation steady, but it is understood that they will still consider a sale if a “big-money offer” is put on the table.

However, it remains to be seen if Celtic will part ways with their star man in the coming months, with a big squad rebuild no doubt needed at the club.
