With the chaotic sacking of Liam Rosenior still fresh in everyone’s minds, the post-mortem at Stamford Bridge has started.

The Blues recently managed to grind out a massive FA Cup semi-final victory over Leeds under interim boss Calum McFarlane.

However, the underlying cultural rot at the club has become painfully obvious.

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has suggested to Chelsea to bring legendary midfielder Claude Makelele back to the club.

Speaking candidly on his BBC podcast, Rooney revealed how a chance encounter completely sold him on the Frenchman’s enduring aura.

Makelele, who won two Premier League titles at Chelsea under Jose Mourinho and literally had a midfield role named after him, previously worked as a coach at the club before departing by mutual consent in September 2023.

“I played a charity game last year and Claude Makelele was there,” Rooney explained.

“We sat down after the game and had a glass of wine, I absolutely loved him. I was thinking at the time, someone with his mentality and mindset, having him around the place would be great for Chelsea”.

It’s an incredibly fair point. Right now, the modern Chelsea dressing room looks devoid of genuine leadership.

Rooney also highlighted a glaring difference between the modern Stamford Bridge crop and the legendary Chelsea teams he battled against in his prime.

Back in the day, the managerial revolving door didn’t actually disrupt Chelsea’s relentless winning machine.

“If you go back to Chelsea when they under Lampard, Terry, Cech, Makelele, it actually didn’t matter that much if the manager was sacked because you’ve got a group of leaders who will lead on the pitch,” Rooney observed.

Blues are lacking leaders at the club

He pointed out that groups of elite players effectively “run the football club,” drawing parallels to his own trophy-laden days at Manchester United.

As BlueCo scrambles to find a permanent successor for Rosenior, with names like Andoni Iraola heavily linked, they might want to take a serious look at Rooney’s advice.

Tactics and formations are crucial, but Chelsea desperately needs a total cultural reset.

Re-integrating a serial winner like Makelele into the backroom staff could be the exact kind of stabilising, no-nonsense presence required to finally whip this talented but fragile squad into shape.
