Darren Bent moots disappointment for 'outstanding' Everton duo at the end of season

Darren Bent has been singing the praises of James Garner and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, but has still tipped the Everton duo for disappointment at the end of the season.

Garner and Dewsbury-Hall have been two of Everton’s most important players this season, as David Moyes looks to put the Toffees back into the European mix.

Of course, with it being a World Cup year, the two Englishmen will be hoping to make their way into Thomas Tuchel’s plans.

Bent, who featured for the Three Lions on 13 occasions between 2006 and 2011, understands the difficulty of making your case for selection.

Now, the former England international has not provided much optimism for Garner’s and Dewsbury-Hall’s World Cup hopes.

What did Darren Bent say about James Garner and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall?

As the season begins to come to a close, who will and will not make Tuchel’s squad will become much clearer.

Garner and Dewsbury-Hall are certainly two players who will be in contention for a spot on the plane headed for North America in the summer.

The Everton pair have yet to make a single appearance for the English national team, and Bent believes their time to impress Tuchel has already run out.

Speaking on talkSPORT on Tuesday, Bent said: “James Garner has been brilliant for Everton, but I don’t think there is enough time. He has been outstanding. I think it will be incredibly difficult because there’s an overload.

“Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, he for Everton has been outstanding, but he plays in that position, the ten role, where we have got too many.”

Toffees manager Moyes has been attempting to increase his player’s chances of a dream call-up, most recently suggesting Dewsbury-Hall is not far off the England squad.

However, as Bent suggests, he does have to compete with the likes of Jude Bellingham, Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and plenty more.

Garner may end up having the higher odds to make the squad in that regard.

Why the upcoming March international break will define the Everton pair’s chances

The March international break will be the last time Tuchel gets to have a close look at any undecided options for the World Cup.

If Garner or Dewsbury-Hall are not included in the squad for friendlies against Uruguay and Japan, you would think that would virtually end their hopes of a call-up.

The upcoming international games will be used as preparation for the World Cup, and Tuchel will not want to take any risks on uncapped players when he chooses his final squad for June.

The Everton duo still have a few weeks to make an impression, as Tuchel did not name his November squad until six days before the first match of that international break.

England play Uruguay on 27 March, so if history is to be taken as fact, then sometime around 21 March, the squad will be confirmed.
