EFL told to 'revise' policy after Sheffield Wednesday 15-point deduction waived - expert

Sheffield Wednesday benefitted from flexibility in the EFL’s insolvency policies to avoid a 15-point deduction next season when the Championship club drops into League One.

That is according to former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking to Football Insider, who believes it is the right decision now for the EFL to review its insolvency policies.

Sheffield Wednesday’s Championship rivals were said to be angry at the Owls’ points deduction being waived by the EFL.

The announcement came after a takeover of Sheffield Wednesday had been completed by a consortium led by David Storch.

Dejphon Chansiri had owned the Yorkshire club since 2015, but his ownership effectively ended when the Owls went into administration in October 2025.

EFL told to make changes after Sheffield Wednesday takeover completed

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – praises the EFL for showing “flexibility” in Sheffield Wednesday’s case and states that has got to be maintained in the future.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness though believes there is something “wrong” within the EFL’s insolvency policies that must change.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “It’s got to be revised [EFL insolvency policies], it’s something in the rules that are wrong.

“We’re finding some very difficult financial engineering that happens now with owners. Chansiri, he came in and he did make an attempt to invest in the club initially, but it all went wrong, certainly in the last two or three seasons.

“So that’s got to be taken into account as well. There’s never a one size fits all in these sorts of situations. Each one tends to be very unique, and so having flexibility within the rules is key.

“That’s what they’ve got to try and build in, is that flexibility, and in this case they did have that flexibility, and they used it wisely.”

David Storch makes first key behind-the-scenes hire

Wyness previously told Football Insider that Storch deserves his chance to rebuild Sheffield Wednesday, and that the 73-year-old is currently saying all the right things to please the supporters.

Storch has already begun work at Hillsborough by hiring Sunderland’s former Chief Business Officer David Bruce as the club’s new chief executive.

A busy summer transfer window could await the club, with a rebuild of the squad expected before the League One season begins, whilst they could face challenges keeping their best players, including goalkeeper Pierce Charles.
