Exclusive: Borussia Dortmund plot move to sign Celtic star

Celtic star Arne Engels is attracting intense interest in a summer move with Borussia Dortmund the latest side to join the race, sources have told Football Insider.

The 22-year-old was subject to offers during the January transfer window, including a £25million bid from Nottingham Forest, but ultimately remained at Parkhead.

However, there is a growing feeling that he could be allowed to move on for the right price this summer, with clubs across Europe’s top leagues taking notice.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, Dortmund are now readying a move for Engels and could step up their interest.

They have joined other Bundesliga clubs, as well as those in the Premier League and Serie A, in the race for his signature ahead of a busy transfer window for Celtic.

Could Arne Engels leave Celtic this summer?

Football Insider revealed last month that Celtic are bracing to receive offers for Engels and are preparing to lose key players ahead of a difficult summer.

Should the Hoops miss out on Champions League qualification, their ambitious will be dealt another blow ahead of a summer which will contain major changes.

A number of clubs have set their sights on Engels as a result of Celtic’s behind-the-scenes issue, with Dortmund now emerging as leading contenders.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “It will be difficult for Celtic to keep hold of Arne Engels this summer.

“My understanding is that the latest club to show interest in Engels is Borussia Dortmund in Germany.

“Again, that would be something that could be attractive to the player, to maybe play Champions League football.

“I’m sure it’s something that would be a big pull for Engels if he did decide to leave Celtic.

“Celtic obviously turned down huge money for Engels in the January window, that big offer from Nottingham Forest on deadline day.

“If the player himself wants to move on, then I’m sure there’ll be a lot of interest in him, but like I said, Dortmund seem to be the latest club out there that are keeping tabs on him.”

Which other clubs are interested in signing Engels?

Engels has attracted interest from across Europe, with the likes of RB Leipzig and Lazio keeping a close eye on his progress at Parkhead.

Premier League interest is also believed to be strong, and while there is no indication that the midfielder has a preferred destination, the money on offer could be tempting.

Football Insider exclusively revealed that Engels is on Nottingham Forest’s shortlist ahead of the summer after they missed out on a mid-season deal.

Forest saw a number of bids turned down on deadline day in February, including a final offer worth £25million, as Celtic were determined to keep their star man.

However, there is a growing feeling he could be available for a similar price in the summer window, when they will have more time to land a replacement.
