Expert: Mikel Arteta 'worried' as multiple Arsenal stars drop out of international duty

Mikel Arteta is concerned about some of most important Arsenal players picking up injurues on international duty as 11 have now returned.

Among those recalled from representing their countries are England trio Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice and Noni Madueke, who will miss the friendly game against Japan.

The likes of William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes and Jurrien Timber have also been recalled with supposed injuries ahead of what is set to be a tough end to the season for the Gunners.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that while Arsenal will be criticised for their players dropping out, Arteta is worried about the title race.

While some may have suffered genuine injuries, there is a belief that Arteta wants to ensure his players are fit and prepared for the end-of-season run-in.

Mikel Arteta concerned as Arsenal stars return

Former Everton CEO Keith Wyness told Football Insider that Arsenal are putting pressure on themselves to be successful after their defeat to Man City.

The Gunners are still competing on three fronts, with ambitions of winning the Champions League and FA Cup as well as the Premier League after entering the latter stages.

After their 2-0 Carabao Cup final defeat against Man City last time out, Arteta wants to ensure his side are prepared to get back to winning ways.

“Mikel Arteta is obviously worried about his players,” Brown told Football Insider.

“Maybe some of them have picked up injuries, it’s difficult just to dismiss it, but the more likely explanation is he wants them back, fit and ready for Arsenal.

“If they go away on international duty and do get injured, it could make a big difference in the last few weeks of the season.

“They’re still competing for the Premier League, Arsenal, and they’re in the FA Cup and Champions League as well, so they’re going to need their players available.

“If they can withdraw them so they’re not involved, give them a bit of time to rest and recover, then it’s far less likely they’ll be missing.”

Arsenal put new summer transfer plans in place

Despite their current focus being set on the end of the season and success with regard to winning silverware, transfer plans are being put in place at the Emirates.

Football Insider revealed on 25 March that Arsenal are preparing for a mass exodus with sporting director Andrea Berta tasked with overseeing sales.

The likes of Ben White and Gabriel Jesus are expected to be on the list of sales as both continue to attract interest in a move away from North London.

Raising funds from their departures would allow the Gunners to spend more freely, having seen their rivals including Chelsea have success with a similar model.

Arsenal are expecting interest in a number of fringe players when the window opens, with a focus now on getting a strong price for their assets.
