Finance Expert: Nottingham Forest could mitigate revenue dip with ‘Amazing’ achievement

Nottingham Forest could mitigate their drop in Premier League prize money by winning the Europa League this season. 

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider claiming the European trophy would be an “amazing” achievement for the club.

Forest qualified for the Europa League after finishing seventh in the Premier League last season, with a quarter-final tie against Porto coming up this month.

However, the East Midlands side have struggled in the top flight this season as they currently sit 16th in the table.

It would come as a huge blow to Forest’s financial situation if they were to be relegated from the Premier League, but they are three points above the drop zone as things stand. 

How much revenue do Nottingham Forest generate?

Forest published their accounts for last season on 26 March, showing their revenue increased from £190m in 2023-24 to £222m, marking a new club record. 

Broadcast revenue surged from £130m to £159m, while commercial income improved from £30m to £39m and matchday rose from £14m to £20m. 

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson discussed Forest’s financial position after posting their latest accounts.

“Overall, given where they’ve come from financially, they’re in okay shape,” said Borson.

“They’ve invested heavily, and it’s generally worked okay because of the trading. They’ve done some pretty good business, got some good players, and they’ve probably got some good players they could move on if they needed to.

“They’ve got themselves over £200m of revenue, which it will be again this season, assuming they stay up.” 

Why Nottingham Forest’s revenue could drop this season

Borson revealed Forest could lose around £30m in prize money if they are relegated this season.

“If they go down, they’re going to have the drop on the broadcast revenue from the Premier League,” said Borson.

“They did about £160m Premier League money last year. That would drop back down to about £130m if they were to be relegated. But even if they survive slightly, it’ll be about £130-133m, so they are going to drop down a bit there.

“But that’s obviously counteracted by the Europa League revenue. Can they win it? I don’t know. They’ve got a tricky tie. It would be an amazing achievement if they did. But I guess Premier League survival is the key.”
