Frank Onyeka’s first words after Coventry lift Championship title, seal EPL promotion

Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka has expressed his joy after helping Coventry City secure the Sky Bet Championship title in emphatic fashion, Soccernet.ng reports.

Managed by Frank Lampard, Coventry confirmed their place at the top of the table with a commanding 5-1 victory over Portsmouth at home on Tuesday night. The result sealed the title with two matches still left to play, a competition the club dominated from start to finish.

It was a night to remember at the Coventry Building Society Arena, as the Sky Blues crowned a remarkable campaign in style. Goals, energy, and control defined their performance, as Lampard’s men overwhelmed Portsmouth all night to officially become champions.

It also proved to be the perfect ending to a short but highly impactful spell for Onyeka, who only joined the club in January. The Nigerian midfielder played his part in stabilising the team during the crucial final months of the season, bringing strength, discipline, and valuable experience from the top flight.

Frank Onyeka’s impact and emotional reaction

After arriving on loan from Brentford in January, Onyeka quickly became a key figure in Coventry’s midfield. The 28-year-old slotted into the team seamlessly, earning a reputation for his tireless work rate and strong defensive displays.

Often described as the engine of the side, Onyeka helped the team maintain balance, breaking up opposition attacks while keeping possession ticking with simple and effective passing. In his 13 appearances, he averaged over a tackle per game and maintained an impressive 80 percent pass accuracy, contributing to several clean sheets during the run-in.

One of his standout moments came on 3 April, when he scored a stunning goal in a thrilling 3-2 win over Derby County. That result proved crucial, as it extended Coventry’s lead at the top of the table at a key stage of the season.

He also played an important role in the 1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers, a result that confirmed Coventry’s promotion to the Premier League. Days later, he featured for over an hour in the decisive 5-1 win against Portsmouth that secured the Championship title.

Reflecting on the achievement, Onyeka shared his pride and appreciation for the journey on social media.

“History doesn’t happen overnight… it takes 25 years. Promotion. Champions. Proud to play a part in something special,” he wrote on X.

Looking ahead, Onyeka is expected to remain at Coventry on a permanent basis, with a compulsory buy clause reportedly set at around €7 million triggered by the club’s promotion. Lampard sees him as a key part of the squad heading into their first Premier League campaign in 25 years, where survival will be the immediate target.
