Ibrox View: Rangers loanee looks destined for permanent exit as harsh reality exposed

Oscar Cortes looks to have no future with Rangers beyond this summer.

The Light Blues have faced a lot of criticism in the past in regard to their recruitment, with Cortes one of the names often mentioned.

The Colombian joined the Gers permanently last summer after a loan spell in the previous campaign, before going on to make just three appearances.

His loan move to Sporting Gijon brought very little success, with the 22-year-old then having moved to Huracan for the remainder of the campaign.

Huracan have the option to sign Cortes permanently this summer, but regardless of whether they take up that option, his future at Ibrox is dull.

The latest breaking news on signings, departures, and Danny Röhl’s primary targets.

How has Oscar Cortes fared at Huracan?

In the 10 appearances he has made in the league for Huracan, Cortes has managed one goal and three assists, which is a fair return.

However, his underlying numbers are far more impressive, with the 22-year-old having completed 58.5 per cent of his attempted dribbles, while also having created four big chances.

The latter places him among the top 10.4 per cent of forwards in Argentina.

But that is the issue. Cortes has struggled to have any impact in European football, especially at a high level.

Come the end of the season, Huracan will have to pay £1.65million to keep him at the club should they choose to do so.

Have we seen the last of Cortes at Rangers?

Whether Huracan take up their option to buy him or not, it looks almost certain that he has played his last game for Rangers.

He’s struggled to have any positive impact since he joined from Lens, and with several players already ahead of him in the pecking order, he would do well to get any minutes at Ibrox.

However, it once again demonstrates the risk Rangers often take when it comes to loaning players with an obligation to buy, as was the case with the Colombian last summer.
