'It's just madness' - Wenham calls out Tottenham as released player thriving elsewhere
Tottenham Hotspur have been blasted for their decision to release Kieran Morgan.
The midfielder came through Spurs’ academy and is a boyhood supporter of the N17 club, but he was let go in the summer of 2024.
He joined Queen’s Park Rangers after that, and is thriving with the Championship club, making 61 appearances in two seasons.
He featured 30 times in the 2025-26 campaign, with two goals and one assist, all coming in the league for the Rs.
Tottenham need to improve the pathway to the first-team for academy talents, rather than releasing them and watching them kick on elsewhere.

What has been said about Tottenham’s decision on Morgan?
John Wenham believes it was the wrong decision from Tottenham to release the 20-year-old midfielder.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, he said: “It was a massive error from whoever made the decision to release Kieran Morgan, a boyhood Tottenham fan who, even when they decided to release him was a regular starter for the Under-18s, so he was contributing in a positive way.
“Because they made external signings, there was deemed to be no pathway for him to be offered a professional contract with Tottenham.

“He went out of Tottenham, brought in at QPR, which is quite a well-trodden path for a lot of players we release that end up at QPR.
“Did a couple of games with their development squad and then very quickly their manager at the time brought him into the first team, and he hasn’t looked back since, he’s had 30 or 40 appearances now at QPR, scored a whole range of goals, plays for England in the Under-20s.
“What would his value be now? £4 or £5 million? And we gave him away for nothing to accommodate external signings, who we subsequently released or just moved on for free.
“It’s just madness, and with the wages that were offered to those two external players, we could have easily kept Morgan on at Tottenham and secured him a loan, maybe at QPR, and we would have been in control of his future.
“He’s a very good Championship-level player for now, and he may get better. So, it’s very, very frustrating with that one.”
Tottenham could have done with Morgan this season
The Lilywhites could have benefited from having Morgan around this season, as their midfield has been decimated by injuries.
Rodrigo Bentancur has struggled to stay fit, Lucas Bergvall has missed significant time, and Pape Sarr has not proven to be a reliable option.

They did get some help, bringing Conor Gallagher in the winter transfer window, but an extra body, who knows the club would have been ideal.
