Journalist calls out Michael Stewart over Hibernian vs Rangers commentary today

Rangers endured a frustrating day at the office ahead of the winter transfer window closing.

Danny Rohl’s side have been trying to bolster their attack in recent weeks, but Rangers look set to miss out on Hansa Rostock striker Ryan Naderi ahead of the 2 February deadline.

Andreas Skov Olsen is one of several Rangers recruits in January, but so far, their winter dealings haven’t set the world alight.

Despite that, Rangers have forced their way back into the Scottish Premiership title race with six straight wins in the league.

But that was halted on Sunday against Hibernian, in a game that left many, including some viewers, deeply perturbed.

Michael Stewart criticised for Hibernian vs Rangers commentary

Rangers were held to a goalless draw at Hibernian on Sunday afternoon, and while they would have been disappointed by the result, some may be quietly relieved.

Hibs passed up the game’s best chances, with the hosts having 17 shots to Rangers’ 11, plus, Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland had to make six saves to Raphael Sallinger’s one.

Not only was it not the best watch, but for some viewers of the Premier Sports game, it was also painful to listen to.

Scottish writer Michael McEwan posted on X that co-commentator Michael Stewart’s commentary was “relentless”, suggesting that less is more in this matter.

“Michael Stewart needs to learn that he doesn’t need to fill absolutely every silence,” McEwan wrote. “It’s relentless. Let the pictures breathe, man.”

Indeed, ESPN broadcaster Craig Burley stressed that when someone, such as ex-Hearts and Hibs player Stewart, is on TV commentary duties, you don’t need to talk as much as you do on the radio.

He tweeted: “Radio requires you to jump in off the back of your commentary partner but TV is a completely different skill set. How people don’t understand this is beyond me.”

To make matters worse, both Hearts and Celtic won at the weekend, to rub more salt into Rangers’ open wounds.

Rangers lose ground in Scottish Premiership title race

This result was a damaging one for Rangers. Their blunt attack found no joy at Easter Road as they claimed a point against fifth-placed Hibernian.

On Saturday, Hearts thumped Dundee United 3-0 and on Sunday, Celtic eased to a 2-0 home win over Falkirk.

These results meant that Hearts are top on 54 points, Celtic are now ahead of Rangers on goals scored, and Rangers are third, six points behind the league leaders.

After the match, Rangers boss Rohl admitted this match was a “tough” one and his players were “disappointed” they could not get all three points.

Moreover, the German said they needed a moment of “magic” and they didn’t get it, nor did they deserve the victory.
