Liverpool can still achieve sensational Jurgen Klopp return despite official admission

Jurgen Klopp has been heavily linked with a return to Liverpool in recent weeks.

The Reds appear to have turned a corner after a dismal run of six defeats from seven Premier League games across October and November, a run which left Arne Slot under pressure.

Liverpool fans are losing patience with Slot, and they made their frustrations known on social media after the team narrowly edged past bottom-club Wolves on home turf last weekend.

The Dutchman succeeded Klopp after he decided to step down at the end of the 2023-24 campaign, but there have been plenty of suggestions in recent weeks that the switch could be about to take place again in the opposite direction.

Red Bull Sports CEO shuts the door on Jurgen Klopp exit

Klopp was heavily linked with a Liverpool return at the end of November, when Slot was really feeling the heat, and there have also been links with Real Madrid of late.

The German has been out of managerial work since his departure from Anfield, and instead has been operating as the Head of Global Soccer for the Red Bull group.

His counterpart at Red Bull, managing director Oliver Mintzlaff, has made it incredibly clear that he doesn’t think Klopp would be open to leaving his current position.

He suggested that Klopp feels “totally comfortable” in his role during an interview with Welt, but also accepted that he and the company would “have to deal with it” if an approach were to come in.

While Mintzlaff’s suggestion is relatively blunt and appears to close the door on the possibility of a return to Liverpool, the Reds may still be able to play on Klopp’s heartstrings if they were to remove Slot.

The 58-year-old shares a remarkable relationship with the supporters on Merseyside, and if an approach were to come from his former club, then it may just be enough to tempt him into a return.

Liverpool must play the long game for Klopp

Klopp is held in extremely high regard at Liverpool, and while a return at some stage would undoubtedly please almost everybody connected to the club, they will have to bide their time if they want to make it happen.

The German quickly built a reputation for being a tireless and relentless coach during his time in the dugout at both Anfield and beyond, and it feels unlikely that he will be able to stay away from his bread and butter of management for too long.

He is almost a year into his role with Red Bull, and while there has been little indication that he is ready to walk away from that so far, it is surely only a matter of time before the urge to scratch his managerial itch returns.

That may take months or even potentially years, but Liverpool would surely be his main desire if he were to get into that mindset.

As a result, if the Reds truly want to turn the possibility of a return into a reality, then it is time that they start putting a little pressure on their former boss.
