Local journo shares how many signings needed to keep up with new Everton expectations
Everton have been predicted to bring in at least six summer signings if they secure European football next season.
That is the view of Liverpool Echo reporter Chris Beesley, who regaled how David Moyes had said last summer that the Toffees needed “nine or 10 players before the start of the season”.
In the end, Everton made nine signings, but not many of them have moved the needle a great deal.
For instance, Mark Travers and Tom King were recruited as backup goalkeepers, Adam Aznou has struggled to make an impact, as has loanee Merlin Rohl, and £35million recruit Tyler Dibling.
Thierno Barry has underwhelmed in attack but Jack Grealish impressed before injury ended his loan move from Manchester City.
Carlos Alcaraz has been a bit hit and miss but Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall has proven to be a shrewd acquisition.
As the Merseyside outfit attempt to bring European football to Hill Dickinson Stadium in 2026-27, the Echo believes that half a dozen more recruits could happen in the coming months, amid the uncertainty over the futures of a handful of individuals.

Everton exits likely as ‘new faces’ expected
Beesley points out that Rohl’s loan will become permanent for around £21.7m when Everton’s Premier League safety is assured.
Everton have an option to make Tyrique George’s loan permanent but it is “less clear cut” whether the Toffees will do that.
Beesley adds that the “jury remains out” on 20-year-old Dibling, while 19-year-old Aznou is deemed “not ready” following his summer switch from Bayern Munich.
Strikers Beto and Barry have not been “entirely convincing”, with Everton facing a dilemma over what to do with the former’s contract, which expires in the summer of 2027.
The Echo writer believes that depending on how many potential outgoings there may be, there “might have to be at least six new faces” in the summer.

This was written following Everton’s 2-0 win over Burnley on Tuesday, a result that lifted them up to eighth in the Premier League.
That puts them just one point behind Brentford, who are currently in pole position to qualify for next season’s Conference League. With nine games to go, anything can happen.
But if Everton want to go bigger in the transfer market, they may need that extra European cash to facilitate such an act.
Who else may leave Everton?
Fellow Echo writer Paul Wheelock addressed Everton’s more pressing contract matters, involving Vitalii Mykolenko, Michael Keane, Idrissa Gueye and Seamus Coleman.
He believes that the first three remain “important members of Moyes’ first-team squad” and deserve new deals, with their current terms expiring this summer.
Coleman, though, has hardly featured in the past two seasons and turns 38 later this year. Elsewhere, Wheelock is concerned that if Everton sign George permanently, that could hamper the development and game time of Dibling.

He also feels that if a deal can be done to sign Grealish for good, then that should be explored, but not for the reported fee of £50m and the wages that he commands at Etihad Stadium.
Wheelock states that Everton “need one more winger”, preferably one with a good injection of pace, but the “top priority” has to be a right-back.
Nathan Patterson has been linked with an Everton exit and if that happens, the Toffees need to act in the market. A busy summer could be in store for the Friedkin Group.
