Man Utd targeting £35m England star and former Chelsea defender
Newcastle and England left-back Lewis Hall has reportedly emerged as a target for Manchester United ahead of the summer transfer window.
Hall has established himself as a key component of Eddie Howe’s Newcastle side after completing a £35million switch from Chelsea in 2024 following an initial loan move.
Also comfortable playing in midfield, Hall’s versatility has proven invaluable over the course of his three years in the north east and he played an instrumental role last season as the Magpies won the Carabao Cup to end their trophy drought.
But the 21-year-old has taken his game to a new level in recent months and he appears a shoo-in for England’s World Cup squad after being named in Thomas Tuchel’s 35-man party for the Three Lions’ upcoming friendlies with Uruguay and Japan.
Hall’s outstanding performances have not gone unnoticed by Newcastle’s rivals, though, and Sky Sports claim the Chelsea academy product now finds himself on Manchester United’s radar.
It’s claimed Hall has been placed on the Red Devils’ ever-growing shortlist of possible targets for the summer and ‘is a name United have been impressed with’ this term.
Old Trafford bosses are scouring the market for potential reinforcements to support Luke Shaw in preparation for Champions League football next season, with the club sitting third in the Premier League table following a resurgence under Michael Carrick.

United are aware that closing a deal for Hall would likely prove tricky, with Newcastle in no hurry to cash in on a full-back still some way from approaching the peak years of his career.
Hall’s current contract at St James’ Park runs through to June 2029.
Should Hall go on and enjoy a strong campaign with England at this summer’s World Cup, his market value is certain to soar and United may not be the only team to enquire over his availability.
‘It can be quite nerve-racking knowing that this is the last opportunity to maybe impress,’ Hall told reporters ahead of England’s upcoming double-header with Uruguay and Japan.
‘But at the same time, I think you play so many games in the season, I think they all know the way that you like to play.
‘And I think this is just another chance for you to show not only what you can do on the pitch, but what you’re like off the pitch.
‘And I think if you can spread positivity across the group, and I think he’s always been keen on making sure that everyone in the group has their part to play off the pitch.
‘So I’m just looking to be as happy as possible and enjoy my football here. Hopefully it will put me in a good position.’
Hall dismissed claims that his previous experience with Tuchel – who handed him his senior debut at Chelsea – could give him the edge over England’s other left-backs entering the World Cup.
‘When I knew him back in my Chelsea days, I was obviously not quite in the first-team, but I was training quite regularly with them at a certain point,’ he explained.
‘He was the one who gave me my debut, so I was obviously incredibly grateful for that and that’ll be a memory that I’ll always have.’
He went on: ‘But I think I’m a completely different person now, completely different player now so I don’t necessarily read too much into the past.
‘I know he’s a great guy, so I’m looking forward to working with him again. He’s obviously a great coach.
‘For me personally, I just want to look to do my best here and learn from these players and from this coach.
‘Hopefully that will put me in a good position.’
Hall is not the only Premier League left-back to be linked with United in recent days. Myles Lewis-Skelly is reportedly being monitored by the Red Devils after dropping down the pecking order at Arsenal.
Crystal Palace’s Tyrick Mitchell and Fulham’s Antonee Robinson are also believed to be in United’s crosshairs as potential additions for next season.
Another player of interest is Alphonso Davies, who Bayern Munich are reportedly open to selling for the right price given the Canadian’s injury problems over the last 18 months.
