Rafael Leao linked again with Manchester United but here’s why the transfer would be a gamble
AC Milan star Rafael Leao has again been mentioned as a transfer target for Manchester United as speculation hots up over his future this summer.
Although the Portugal international is a big name, we judge this to be a risky potential deal for Man Utd with the help of our Transfer Fit rating system – find out more about how it works here.
Leao has undoubtedly shown moments of real quality during his time with Milan, so it’s perhaps not surprising that first the Daily Mail and now Calciomercato have reports on interest from the Red Devils.

Still, given his recent stats, injury record, age, and likely high transfer fee, we came up with the score below for Leao and United…
| Rafael Leao | TOTAL SCORE: 11/25 |
| Transfer fee | * |
| Performance | *** |
| Achievements | *** |
| Career phase | ** |
| Squad need | ** |
MUFC already have a pretty decent attack, so it seems clear to us that this is not a deal that would be worth risking so much money on this summer.
11/25 is the lower end of medium – not a disastrous signing by any means, but a combination of factors mean it has the feel of one of those expensive deals that United have got wrong in the past.
What next for Rafael Leao?
Milan surely won’t be too keen to let Leao go, so it will be interesting to see if this speculation really leads anywhere.
Arsenal have also recently been linked with the 26-year-old by Football Transfers, so that could be another saga to watch out for, and in fairness the Gunners probably need someone of that profile a bit more than United do right now.

United will likely focus on other priorities this summer after signing a whole new front three last year as they brought in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko.
Leao, having never played in the Premier League before, would probably find English football quite a big step up from Italy.
