Revealed: Aston Villa could be set to lose millions after plans confirmed

Aston Villa could be set to lose around £5million in revenue after announcing plans to redevelop Villa Park.

The Premier League club have been considering their options to expand the 42,000-seater stadium’s capacity over the past few years.

Villa confirmed on Tuesday (21 April) the North Stand will be closed for the entirety of next season to facilitate the redevelopment.

While the temporary closure will see Villa Park’s capacity drop to around 37,000 in 2026-27, the stadium will be able to hold more than 50,000 fans after the work is completed.

The reduced capacity is expected to have an impact on Villa’s financial situation next season, but the plans will help improve their revenues in the long term.

How Aston Villa’s matchday revenue could be impacted next season

Villa posted their accounts for last season earlier this month, showing their revenue improved from £275.7m in 2023-24 to £378.1m in 2024-25, making a new club record.

That figure was boosted by the West Midlands giants’ performances in the Champions League, having reached the quarter-finals before being knocked out by eventual winners PSG.

Competing in European football’s elite club competition brought in higher gate receipts following a rise in ticket prices around those matches.

Villa’s matchday revenue increased from £28m in 2023-24 – when they reached the Conference League semi-finals – to £38.4m last season.

Unai Emery’s side are on course to secure Champions League football again for next season, but the redevelopment plans at Villa Park will prevent them from cashing in on gate receipts.

With around 5,000 fewer seats available in 2026-27, Villa’s matchday revenue could drop by close to £5m compared to last season depending on how far they progress in the Champions League.

How Aston Villa are closing in on Champions League qualification

Villa currently sit fourth in the Premier League table heading into the final five games of the campaign.

Emery’s side have built up an eight-point gap to sixth-place Brighton, with five Champions League spots on offer this season.

Meanwhile, Villa are through to the Europa League semi-finals, where they will face Nottingham Forest for a place in the final.

If they can win the second-tier competition, that would secure the Villans’ automatic place in the Champions League for next season in the unlikely scenario they miss out domestically.

Next up for Emery’s side is a trip to Craven Cottage to face Fulham on Saturday (25 April), where they will be looking to cement their spot in the top five.
