Sources: Celtic manager Martin O'Neill spotted watching on-loan Tottenham star

Alfie Devine was the focus of attention from Celtic manager Michael O’Neill as he was spotted in attendance at Preston vs QPR, sources have told Football Insider.

The Hoops boss was in the stands as the Championship clash ended 1-1, leading to speculation about which player he could be tracking ahead of the transfer window.

Devine, 21, is on loan at Preston from Tottenham and is believed to be a target for Celtic, who are keen to improve their midfield options in the summer.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, O’Neill was keen to watch Devine in person to assess whether he would be a good fit.

While the interim manager is set to leave his role at Parkhead at the end of the season, he is expected to help with Celtic’s ambitious transfer plans ahead of the summer.

Alfie Devine emerges as new Celtic midfield target

Football Insider revealed last month that Celtic want to sign a new midfielder in the summer amid interest in Kilmarnock star David Watson and other targets.

Concerns about their current options including the long-term futures of Callum McGregor, Arne Engels and Reo Hatate could force them into the transfer market.

Sources say Devine has emerged on their list of targets, although any deal in the summer will depend on whether Tottenham have plans for him after his loan at Preston.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “It was interesting that Martin O’Neill was there watching, I’m sure he was watching the number of players.

“From what I’m hearing, it might have been Alfie Devine, the young midfielder who’s having a very good season for Preston in midfield, on loan from Tottenham.

“He was somebody that O’Neill was casting an eye over ahead of a potential summer move and for Devine, but again, it would be a hard deal to do.

“It’ll be interesting to see what Spurs have got planned for Devine after a successful season on loan at Preston.”

Who else is on Celtic’s shortlist of midfielders?

Celtic’s emerging interest in Devine does not come as a surprise, as he has now become the latest name added to their list of midfield targets this summer.

Kilmarnock star Warson, as previously mentioned, remains a target for the Hoops as he looks set to become available on a free transfer this summer.

Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed last month that Celtic are keen to sign Damian Bobadilla of Sao Paulo and have been impressed by his displays.

The 24-year-old is set to represent Paraguay at the World Cup, where Celtic will cast an eye over his displays, although they are not alone in their pursuit.

Premier League duo Brighton and Brentford have also been linked with the midfielder after what has been a strong start to the season for him in Brazil.
