Tottenham: Roberto De Zerbi would stay in Championship as agreement shared

Tottenham Hotspur have moved everything to convince Roberto De Zerbi to take over.

After a slow start to the international break, Igor Tudor was finally sacked in North London on Sunday, with his disastrous reign quickly forgotten.

Initally, De Zerbi wanted to wait until the summer, but that has been accelerated.

Tottenham are one point and one spot ahead of the Premier League relegation zone, with games against Sunderland and Brighton coming up.

De Zerbi will be in charge of those, and he looks set for the long haul regardless of how this season ends.

Tottenham forget relegation clause for Roberto De Zerbi

De Zerbi has agreed upon a five-year contract at Hotspur Way, with an announcement now said to be imminent between the pair.

Sami Mokbel of the BBC has revealed that no relegation clause has been added to the deal.

Roberto De Zerbi’s last three managerial stintsWin percentage
Shakhtar Donetsk (May 2021-July 2022)66.67%
Brighton (September 2022-June 2024)42.7%
Marseille (July 2024-February 2026)56.5%

That is either unbelievable arrogance behind this relegation battle, or the ultimate confidence that De Zerbi would stick around regardless.

Either way, he would either need to resign or be paid off millions, given the length of the contract.

Given De Zerbi’s history of hostility and not exactly sticking around for years at certain clubs, it’s a huge risk from the Italian, and more importantly, ENIC.

High-profile managers in the Championship

The first name that immediately springs to mind is Marcelo Bielsa.

It was wild news throughout England when El Loco turned up at Elland Road, spending two years in the Championship before Leeds returned to the Premier League.

Several names that have recently served in the Premier League have tasted success in the second-tier too, including the likes of Enzo Maresca and Eddie Howe.

Where would De Zerbi fit into those?

Bielsa likely takes top spot in that regard, but De Zerbi would certainly fit into that second category with those types of names like Maresca.

Given his past, though, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he were to jump ship should relegation happen.

With a five-year contract agreed, though, he would likely be better off on a personal level sticking around and taking the payout of a possible sacking on his record.

Either way, none of that will matter if he hits the ground running and drags Tottenham to safety, which he should with the players at his disposal.
