Tyrone Mings’ Aston Villa future must be in doubt as Waldemar Anton move touted

Tyrone Mings must be fearing for his future at Aston Villa as they reportedly track Borussia Dortmund defender Waldemar Anton ahead of the summer window.

Mings has been restricted to 16 appearances across all competitions for Villa this season amid recurring injury concerns.

He is now 33-years-old and approaching the final year of his contract at the club, with Pau Torres and Ezri Konsa usually preferred from the off by Unai Emery in the last few months.

According to a new report from Sky Germany, Villa are among those interested in signing Borussia Dortmund centre-back Anton this summer, with Man United and Atletico Madrid also keen.

It remains to be seen if Anton will be involved in Villa’s transfer plans this summer, but regardless of whether they clinch a deal, Mings should be concerned that the club are preparing to let him go soon.

Waldemar Anton interest should worry Tyrone Mings

Anton has made 42 appearances across all competitions for Dortmund this season and played an integral part in some impressive form that has seen them effectively seal second place in the Bundesliga already.

The 29-year-old is one of the most progressive centre-backs in the division from a statistical standpoint, and is also a regular for Germany, with a spot in their World Cup squad looking likely this summer.

He clearly has quality, with the likes of United and Atleti linked ahead of the summer, and Villa may well struggle to land his signature as a result of interest from those bigger clubs.

Above anything else, such links show that Emery definitely wants to bolster his centre-back depth this summer, with Marcos Senesi also linked to Villa Park in recent weeks.

Sources have told Football Insider that Newcastle are also interested in Senesi, but Villa hold an advantage because they are set to qualify for the Champions League.

Mings’ exit looks even more likely given Pau Torres latest

Mings is the most likely centre-back to leave Villa this summer for several reasons as they line up a new signing.

Pau Torres recently insisted that he sees his long-term future at the club in an interview with Marca, and neither he nor Ezri Konsa look set to be sold if Villa can help it this summer.

That leaves Mings and Victor Lindelof, and the latter has put in better performances for Villa this season, with stats also backing that up.

As per AVFC Statto, via X, Villa have recorded a win rate of 71 per cent or higher in all three of the Premier League defensive partnerships that Lindelof has played in this season.

Mings’ numbers do not compare, as Villa have won just one of the five games that he has started alongside Konsa this term.

He is also the oldest of any of the Villans’ centre-backs and approaching the last year of his contract, so it is clear that he should be the most concerned of any of their players in that position right now.
