View: David Moyes has surely revealed his top deadline day target in latest Everton move
David Moyes has clearly signalled that he would like a full-back through the door at Everton on transfer deadline day.
The Toffees have been short at both sides of their defence all season, with their issues being highlighted once again during the 1-1 draw with Brighton on Saturday.
Everton salvaged a point at the Amex, with Beto scoring a 97th-minute equaliser to cancel out Pascal Gross’ opener.
Moyes made his priorities for deadline day clear during his post-match press conference and sent a strong message to the higher-ups at the Hill Dickinson Stadium with his team selection.
David Moyes fumes at The Friedkins
With Vitalii Mykolenko picking up an injury in the lead-up to Saturday’s Premier League clash, Moyes opted to start with Jarrad Branthwaite at left-back.
It meant that Everton lined up with a back four of centre-backs, with Jake O’Brien on the opposite flank and Michael Keane alongside James Tarkowski in the middle.
The Toffees were solid enough with the unusual defensive line, but really struggled going forward, creating exactly 0.00xG in the first half.
Moyes was clearly sending a message to The Friedkin Group and the rest of the recruitment staff with his team selection, highlighting the need for a new full-back before the end of the window.
Speaking after the game, the Everton boss voiced his concerns, saying: “We still feel as if we need a right-back. I always had it in my head that Jarrad (Branthwaite) could easily cover at left-back.”
From his post-match press conference, Moyes indicates that the owners are aligned with his desire for a new right-back.
However, the unusual nature of his starting line-up hints that there are some disagreements behind the scenes.
Who are Everton targeting at right-back?
Despite Moyes’ desperation to sign a right-back before the transfer deadline, the Toffees are still not close to an incoming.
The Merseyside outfit have been tentatively linked with several options, but they are quickly running out of time before the 7:00 pm deadline.
Everton are interested in Sheffield United right-back Femi Seriki, and the Championship outfit may be forced into accepting a late bid.
Seriki’s contract expires in 2027, but a big offer from Moyes’ side could leave the Blades no option but to accept.
Either way, some movement is desperately needed in that area.
