View: Everton ace proves his worth once again to Moyes with 100% display vs Arsenal
James Garner was absolutely superb in Everton‘s 2-0 loss to Arsenal.
Garner has been impressive under David Moyes, and he has become one of the first names on the team sheet in 2025-26.
The English midfielder was asked to play at right-back with Everton light on numbers in defence, which obviously isn’t his preferred role.
However, he was incredibly comfortable, defending with ease against both Noni Madueke and Gabriel Martinelli.
Everton have struggled against Arsenal in the past, but Garner’s performance typified how well the Toffees played at the Emirates.

James Garner stands out in Arsenal vs Everton
Not only is he brilliant on the ball, but his versatility in multiple different positions must be a manager’s dream.
According to Sofascore, Garner has made 89 tackles and 49 interceptions this season, which is simply outstanding.
His defensive ability was on show against Arsenal, winning 100 per cent of his ground duels and making three recoveries.
Stat Garner Appearances 29 Goals 2 Assists 5 Pass accuracy 87.5% Ground duels won 62.5%
With five clearances and three interceptions against Arsenal, Garner’s display was flawless.
On the ball, the 25-year-old recorded a pass accuracy of 81 per cent and had 46 touches throughout the match.
Unfortunately, he couldn’t prevent the Gunners from scoring a late winner, but he’ll take immense pride in his display against the league leaders.

The Sofascore graphic above shows how well he played in North London, and England manager Thomas Tuchel will surely be considering selecting him for the World Cup in June.
Garner’s performance vs Arsenal must put him in mix for England call-up
Despite representing England at a youth level, he has never earned a senior cap.
However, if he keeps up his current run of form, that could end very soon.
In terms of midfielders, only Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson are considered as guarantees for the Three Lions squad, which leaves him with a good chance of being called up.
There aren’t many English players who can offer as much as Garner, particularly when it comes to his calm nature on the ball.
The next international break at the end of March is just around the corner, and it’s not out of the question that he is called up by England then.
Tuchel has surely seen enough from him to see that he’s ready to play on the biggest stage in football, and Saturday’s showing has only reinforced that point.
