View: Everton have extra motivation for Liverpool clash after Arne Slot latest

Everton will not get Liverpool boss Arne Slot sacked if they overcome their local rivals on Sunday, but they could start his demise.

The Blues host the Anfield side at Hill Dickinson Stadium on 19 April in a clash that could define both side’s season.

The Reds are still pushing for a Champions League qualification place, while the Toffees are trying to qualify for European football themselves.

Victory for David Moyes‘ side could start the “beginning of an end” according to Daily Mirror reporter Andy Dunn.

That should give Everton extra motivation for the contest, as they could set a chain in motion that would leave their rivals in chaos.

What was said about Everton and Slot’s future?

Everton have a genuine chance of beating Liverpool, as the Reds have not been up to their usual high standards this season.

Slot has presided over 17 defeats, but even a heavy loss, similar to the 5-2 one that saw Marco Silva sacked by the Blues in 2019, would not see him dismissed, per Dunn’s report.

He said: “Even if Slot suffers the same sort of Merseyside derby defeat that saw Marco Silva’s Everton tenure immediately terminated – a 5-2 Anfield thrashing in December 2019 – it will not be the immediate end for Slot.

“But anything less than a full-blooded response to the recent disappointments will be the beginning of an end that will come very soon after.”

Could Everton finish above Liverpool?

Everton could end up finishing above the Reds for the first time since the 2012-13 season, if results go the right way in the final few matches.

The Blues are currently five points behind, but Slot’s side have a difficult last six matches, with games against fellow top-five contenders, Manchester United, Chelsea and Aston Villa.

Moyes’ side would likely need to be flawless to overturn the gap, and it may be a hard ask with the likes of title-chasing Manchester City and Tottenham, who may need to win to avoid relegation, still to come.

However, it is not beyond the realm of possibility at all, given the contrasting fortunes between the sides at the moment.

The atmosphere surrounding the 20-time champions is dismal and has the potential to turn toxic, while Toffees fans feel their club is on the start of an upwards journey.

If they get the right result in the derby, it could swing the balance in their favour and push them on to go and record a historic end to the campaign, and heap even more misery on the Dutch manager and his team.
