Tottenham Hotspur have been handed a boost after Lucas Bergvall returned to training.

Bergvall had been out for almost two months with an ankle injury but was spotted taking part in drills ahead of Spurs’ Champions League last-16 second leg against Atletico Madrid.

He underwent surgery in January before beginning his rehabilitation, and has now recovered to the extent that he trained with his team-mates at Hotspur Way on Tuesday.

Igor Tudor will be delighted with the midfielder’s imminent comeback, having been forced to name a threadbare squad for the valiant 1-1 draw at Liverpool last time out.

Bergvall is unlikely to play against Atletico, but his promising steps forward come with the Lilywhites in dire straits, as they fight to stay in the Premier League.

What impact will Lucas Bergvall have on Tottenham?

It’s fair to say that the 20-year-old is a favourite among supporters – and with good reason.

He has been a rare glimmer of hope in a truly dismal campaign, having made 26 appearances across all competitions and scored one goal before his injury blow.

This was despite Bergvall suffering under Thomas Frank, who often used the young Swede in wider positions, away from his preferred role in the centre of midfield.

But he successfully made the most of a bad hand. According to Sofascore, he registered two assists from his 17 top-flight matches, while boasting a pass accuracy of 83 per cent.

In the opposition half, that dropped slightly to 78 per cent, but the talent still relished dictating play and feeding his team-mates.

He also recorded an impressive 70 per cent dribble success.

At the other end, Bergvall averaged 1.2 tackles and two balls recovered per game, demonstrating a work ethic that saw him become indispensable to Ange Postecoglou.

Tudor is in dire need of a creative spark in midfield, and Bergvall will almost certainly provide that. First, though, he must be given time to rediscover his match sharpness.

Chelsea and Aston Villa wanted Bergvall

Fresh from helping Spurs win the Europa League at the end of his impressive first campaign in North London, Bergvall was deservedly named the club’s player of the year.

But after his situation took a turn for the worse in January, long-term suitors made their move. According to The Athletic, Chelsea and Aston Villa made enquiries over his signature.

It was made clear that Tottenham would not entertain a sale, but how the rest of the season plays out could determine whether the ace looks for a move away.

For now, Spurs hold all of the cards, having tied him down to a new deal until June 2031, and they will be in no hurry to let him go.

It would be another unwanted side plot in their relegation fight.
