103rd-minute agony for hero Dieseruvwe as Nigeria star’s Rochdale lose title to York City

Emmanuel Dieseruvwe thought he had done it – win the National League title for Rochdale and power the club's promotion to League Two, Soccernet.ng reports.

Deep into stoppage time at the Crown Oil Arena, with the clock showing 95 minutes, the Nigerian striker rose high to meet a cross from veteran forward Ian Henderson and powered a header into the net. It was his 25th league goal of the season, and it looked like the one that would send Rochdale back into League Two.

The situation was simple on the final day as Rochdale only had to beat leaders York City to win the National League title and secure automatic promotion. The tension-soaked tie remained goalless deep into injury time and it appeared only one moment of magic would decide the outcome.

As Dieseruvwe’s header hit the back of the net, the stadium erupted in acknowledgement that the historic moment had arrived. Fans poured onto the pitch in celebration, convinced the job was done. Players embraced, staff joined in, and for a few chaotic minutes, it felt like promotion had been sealed.

But football can be cruel. The pitch invasion caused a delay of more than six minutes, pushing the game far beyond the expected stoppage time.

When play finally resumed, York City had one last chance. In the 103rd minute, striker Josh Stones struck an equaliser with virtually the final kick of the game. The score ended 1-1.

Instead of celebrating a title, Rochdale were left stunned. York City finished on 108 points and claimed automatic promotion, while Rochdale, despite an extraordinary 106-point campaign, must now go through the play-offs.

It was a moment that summed up both the brilliance and heartbreak of Dieseruvwe's career.

Dieseruvwe: A long road to becoming a goal machine

Dieseruvwe’s journey to that dramatic afternoon has been anything but straightforward. Born in Leeds to Nigerian parents and standing at an imposing 6ft 5in, he began his career in the youth system at Sheffield Wednesday. Yet he never made a senior appearance for the club.

Instead, his early years were defined by a series of loan spells across the lower leagues. He turned out for clubs such as Hyde, Fleetwood Town, Chesterfield and Mansfield Town, often moving before he could fully settle. At Chesterfield, where he signed permanently in 2015, he scored his first professional goal against Carlisle United, only to be sent off in the same match, a sign of the ups and downs that would follow.

Searching for regular football, he dropped into the National League North with Kidderminster Harriers and Boston United. It was a step down, but one that helped him find consistency and sharpen his game.

Stability finally came with Salford City in 2017. Over four seasons, Dieseruvwe played a key role as the club climbed from the National League North to League Two. One of his standout moments came at Wembley in 2019, when he scored in the National League play-off final to help secure promotion.

After a quieter spell at Tranmere Rovers, his career found fresh life at Grimsby Town. There, he became a fan favourite, scoring a hat-trick on the final day of the season to push the club into the play-offs, and later netting a crucial extra-time winner against Notts County.

In recent years, Dieseruvwe has evolved into one of the National League’s most reliable scorers. At FC Halifax Town, he finished as top scorer and lifted the FA Trophy, even though suspension ruled him out of the final. At Hartlepool United, he reached new heights, scoring 39 goals across two seasons and becoming the club’s first player in 15 years to hit 20 goals in a single campaign.

His move to Rochdale in 2025 has been his most productive yet. This season’s 25 league goals nearly delivered a title few expected at the start of the campaign.

And while that 95th-minute header will be remembered for the drama that followed, it also reminds of how far Dieseruvwe has come; from a young player drifting through loan spells to a striker capable of carrying a promotion push almost on his own.
