Arne Slot: Steven Gerrard paints brutal truth for Liverpool manager, despite ‘really good’ things he’s heard

Arne Slot is facing an uphill battle to save himself from the sack at Liverpool this summer, according to Steven Gerrard.

The Dutchman is under mounting pressure following a disastrous season that has seen the Premier League champions slip to fifth in the table.

Slot arrived in 2024 to replace legendary manager Jurgen Klopp, and enjoyed a dream first 12 months at Anfield when he guided his team to the Premier League title.

Expectations were high after a summer of significant spending, including deals for Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, which both exceeded £100million.

The Liverpool manager’s team have crumbled, however, and now face a battle to qualify for the Champions League next season.

Steven Gerrard offers blunt reality for Arne Slot

Xabi Alonso is the favourite to replace Slot at Liverpool, after the former midfielder was sacked by Real Madrid in January.

There has not been any indication whether the Reds are planning to appoint the Spaniard, but a change is certainly being considered at Anfield.

Slot’s side are on a run of three consecutive games without victory in the Premier League, having lost to Wolves and Brighton, with a draw against Tottenham sandwiched in the middle.

In some ways, the draw was the worst and most frustrating result of the lot, considering Liverpool are the only Premier League team to drop points to the North London club since the start of February.

There has been relief in the Champions League. The Reds turned around a deficit to beat Galatasaray and set up a quarter-final with PSG, with the first leg set for next week.

In the FA Cup, too, Slot’s side will travel to Manchester City on Saturday in the hopes of progressing to the semi-final.

But Liverpool fans have been left angered by the Dutchman this season, and it will take a lot to change their minds.

“I really like the manager, I think he’s really honest,” Gerrard told The Overlap on Thursday. “I hear really good things of him as a coach, and his style, his tactics and his detail. I hear really good things.

“I think he’s really honest in the media, sometimes too honest. But as a Liverpool fan and someone who’s been an ex-player and knows a little bit on the inside and what most normal punters would know.

“These Liverpool fans, once they get to this stage, it’s very difficult to get them back around. From my own personal experiences and what I’ve seen, very difficult to get them back around.”

Slot can still save himself

While Liverpool remain in the Champions League and the FA Cup, and while they remain in contention for the top five, Slot’s job could still be safe.

Decision-makers at Anfield ultimately do not want to see Slot dismissed at the end of the season.

The money involved in the decision is one factor, but it should not be forgotten that the Dutchman has already shown a capability of guiding his team to the Premier League title.

Understandably, it would be hard to throw that away. With two months remaining, Slot must prove that there is justification behind a potential decision to stick behind him.
