Darren Fletcher’s son sends message after Arsenal seal last-ditch transfer

Tyler Fletcher has reacted after Arsenal completed the signing of St Mirren youngster Evan Mooney on transfer deadline day.

Arsenal agreed a deal to sign Mooney in the final hours of the window, with the 18-year-old expected to join up with the academy team.

The Scotland youth international made 11 appearances in the Scottish Premiership for St Mirren this season, and scored twice in the Challenge Cup.

Mooney was one of two deadline day arrivals at the Emirates Stadium, with Arsenal also signing Jaden Dixon from Stoke City.

Arsenal attempted to sign Hearts striker James Wilson as well, but were beaten to the youngster’s signature by Tottenham.

The twin sons of Darren Fletcher, Tyler and Jack, were thrust into the headlines after their dad took charge of Man United on an interim basis.

Both players had been included in the final three Premier League matchday squads under Ruben Amorim, with Jack being brought off the bench in three games in December.

When Fletcher took over at Man United in the wake of Amorim’s sacking, however, he opted against handing his sons minutes.

Both players were on the bench as the Red Devils were knocked out of the FA Cup by Brighton in the final game before Michael Carrick returned to the dugout.

Tyler Fletcher, 18, is a regular for Scotland’s Under-19s, but is yet to make his senior debut for Man United.

The midfielder is a key cog for the U21s, appearing in all but one of their 13 league games so far this season.

He reacted as his international teammate, Mooney, confirmed his arrival at Arsenal on Wednesday.

The winger took to Instagram and wrote: “Proud moment for me and my family”. Fletcher responded in the comments, and said: “Congrats bro”.

What St Mirren manager said about Evan Mooney

St Mirren will have been disappointed to lose Mooney, but they will be aware that it was a difficult opportunity for the winger to pass up.

In total, he made 23 appearances for the first team, scoring a goal and providing an assist in that time.

Following confirmation, St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson said: “It’s a fantastic opportunity for Evan at a club the size of Arsenal.

“It was a terrific deal for the club as well and we’re very well protected in terms of adds on and sell on should Evan go on to fulfil the potential that we believe that he has.

“Evan, his family and advisers were very keen to go to Arsenal and we wish him nothing but good luck.”

The 18-year-old will hope to continue his development at London Colney, with the hope of eventually breaking into Mikel Arteta‘s side.
