Ex-AVFC CEO 'surprised' by timing of Aston Villa move to fix 'weak link' at Villa Park
Aston Villa are right to accelerate plans to redevelop the North Stand, according to former chief executive Keith Wyness.
Wyness dropped his verdict to Football Insider after Aston Villa announced that the North Stand will close for the entirety of the 2026-27 season.
It was originally planned that the North Stand would be redeveloped over two seasons, but capacity will now drop to 37,000 at Villa Park for the next campaign.
Once finished, Villa Park’s capacity will increase to over 50,000, and provide extra matchday revenue for the club.
Aston Villa face financial restrictions in the transfer market, and the club need to generate extra ways of brining revenue in.

Expanded Villa Park to be ready for EURO 2028
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – knows the North Stand well from his time at Aston Villa.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness believes the stand is the “weak link” of Villa Park and needed to be redeveloped.
Revenue £391m Matchday Revenue £80m Wages-To-Turnover 71% Commercial Revenue £70m
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I know the North Stand intimately. It’s where my office was when I was there.
“So it’ll be getting knocked down, and I’m sure the blue plaque will be going with it that said I was there once. Just joking, of course.
“The North Stand is a strange stand. It is one of the constraints in terms of capacity. It’s right to get it done. I’m surprised they didn’t really get it started a little bit earlier.
“I know that they want to get it done to get ready for the Euros in 2028. It’ll add another 8,000 seats, and will take them to over 50,000 capacity. The issue has always been throwback transportation as well, with the increased capacity, so that’s going to have to be handled in some way, which has always been a bottleneck in terms of Villa Park.
“But I think yes, that’s the one. The Holte End is still magnificent. It’s one of the best ends, and most traditional ends, in British football. So the North Stand is the weak link.”
Aston Villa face concerning Unai Emery situation
Aston Villa’s concerns with financial rules in the transfer market could mean manager Unai Emery walks away from the club this summer.
Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Emery could be worried about Aston Villa’s finances if the club can not match his ambitions.
The Villans look set to achieve Champions League qualification this season, and offers are expected for stars like Morgan Rogers.
Aston Villa may need to sell before they can buy, and Emery could leave if there is interest in his services from rival clubs.
