Ex-refs chief makes his feelings clear over Man United 'red card' controversy vs Man City
Diogo Dalot should have been sent off for a reckless challenge during Man United’s shock win over bitter rivals Man City on Saturday.
That is according to former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA referee, Keith Hackett, who exclusively told Football Insider that officials failed to punish the Man United defender for his foul on Jeremy Doku.
Just 11 minutes into the game, and Anthony Taylor already had a huge decision on his hands at Old Trafford, deciding only to caution the full-back on 19 January.
The decision likely had a major impact on the game, with Bryan Mbeumo returning from AFCON with a bang, before Patrick Dorgu added a second. It was nearly a third, but Mason Mount‘s goal was ruled out.

Arsenal and Mikel Arteta will have been bouncing with the result, with Pep Guardiola already being tipped to leave Man City due to recent performances, but everything could have been different.
Referee Taylor is believed to be one of Howard Webb‘s very best, but it was he who missed the chance to send off United’s No.2, which then became a huge talking point at Old Trafford.
However, the former head of the PGMOL has not blamed the on-pitch official for the incident, rather aiming fingers of blame at VAR official, Craig Pawson, for not advising his coworker.

Had Taylor been advised to take a second look at the pitch-side monitor, the full-back likely would have been given his marching orders, instead of lasting the full 90 minutes against City.
Craig Pawson is to blame for Man United-Man City controversy
Hackett, exclusively speaking to Football Insider on The Final Whistle, said: “Dalot comes in very high, with the face of his boot at the knee of his opponent. While it was a glancing blow, that doesn’t mean it wasn’t serious foul play.
“He should have walked. There’s no question that it’s a red card. If we’re not going to punish this kind of offence, the safety of players is at risk.”
“Anthony Taylor is No.1 or No.2, so he’s a very competent referee. The reality here is that he’s been let down by VAR.
“When you look at the incident at full speed, it’s not an easy one for Taylor to judge. But when you’re sat at home, watching replays, which is what VAR have, there’s no way it’s not a red card.“
