Finance expert: Man United's brief on £100m claims 'irrelevant' as Old Trafford chiefs sent 'absolutely criticial' message
Manchester United must get their next appointment right after being forced to pay significant compensation to their former managers.
That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider it’s “absolutely critical” Man United stop the trend of hiring and firing managers.
Ruben Amorim was sacked in January following a disagreement behind the scenes around senior figures interfering with first-team matters.
Michael Carrick has performed well since being appointed until the end of the season, having won six of his eight games in charge.
Man United have sacked six permanent managers since Sir Alex Ferguson left Old Trafford in 2013.

How much Man United have spent on sacking managers
Man United could have to pay £15.9million in compensation to Amorim and staff following his exit two months ago.
That figure was revealed in the Manchester giants’ second-quarter results, which also showed the club have written off £6.3m in amortised fees paid to Sporting Lisbon as part of the deal to take the Portuguese boss to Old Trafford in November 2024.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson discussed the importance of Man United getting their next manager appointment right.
“It’s a very expensive business,” said Borson.
“If you look at how much United have spent since Ferguson left on manager appointments, ins and outs and compensation on the recruitment and compensation on the sacking, I think we’re up to about £100m now.

“I haven’t got the numbers in front of me, but it’s somewhere in that order. I think United briefed that it wasn’t £100m because one of the exceptionals over the years wasn’t just the manager, it was something else.
“Anyway, the bottom line is whether it’s £100m or whether it’s £90m over 10 years, it’s kind of irrelevant.”
Why Man United sackings have been ‘very expensive’
Borson revealed the importance of Man United making progress under their next permanent manager.
“The bottom line is it’s a very expensive business to hire and fire managers that haven’t worked, so yes, of course, it’s absolutely critical they get this one right,” said Borson.
“But this is just another reason for it. It’s not just about the compensation, it’s about the performance on the pitch, it’s about European qualification, it’s about Champions League qualification and it’s about winning trophies.

“It’s about making the right signings on footballers, which is always the biggest cost. If you make a bad signing, the cost of that is enormous. Not just the transfer fee, but also the wages, all the other ancillary costs, everything else.
“So yes, it’s key they get the right one, but obviously they’ve always tried to get the right one each time they’ve appointed a manager.”
Man United currently sit third in the Premier League table as they go in pursuit of a return to Champions League football.
