Kieran Maguire mocks Crystal Palace after McNeil transfer drama with Everton

Dwight McNeil saw a deadline day move to Crystal Palace collapse.

In the final hours of Monday’s transfer deadline day, Crystal Palace made a reported £20million move for McNeil.

McNeil has been enduring a challenging season with Everton so far, having failed to score in his 14 Premier League appearances, and providing just the one assist.

Even so, despite the fact that Jack Grealish‘s season appears to be over with a foot injury, Everton were willing to let the winger leave the Hill Dickinson Stadium in the final hours of the window.

Kieran Maguire pokes fun at Palace amid Dwight McNeil transfer collapse

As the clock ticked past the 7pm deadline, a deal sheet had been submitted in time for McNeil to complete his Crystal Palace move.

However, two hours later, McNeil’s Palace transfer was revealed to have collapsed, despite a clear willingness from all parties involved to get the deal done.

From Everton’s point of view, £20m would’ve been a considerable amount of money for the 26-year-old, and for Palace, it would’ve nicely shored up their options out wide.

So, why did McNeil’s transfer to Selhurst Park fall through? Well, football finance expert Kieran Maguire thinks he might know the reason, citing Palace’s history with forgetting to check emails.

Maguire decided to mock Palace via X, saying the move was called off because the aforementioned deal sheet ‘got stuck’ in their email out folder.

Maguire states that this mishap wasn’t checked by anyone on Palace’s end confirm whether the deal sheet had been sent or not, and as such, the transfer was lost.

McNeil shambles sets Tyrique George up for tougher Toffees task

Thankfully for Everton, they were able to have better success when getting a transfer done with Chelsea for versatile forward Tyrique George.

Everton have signed George on loan with an option to buy, ensuring that David Moyes will make one new signing this winter.

However, given the 19-year-old is also a winger – who can play as a striker too – the fact that McNeil is still around will add some extra unaccounted for competition.

It will now be interesting to see how Everton and McNeil handle this disappointing transfer collapse, as Moyes may feel more inclined to favour George, and he’ll need to trust that McNeil is in the right headspace too.
