Man United fans left incensed after Paul Scholes sends ‘bitter’ Michael Carrick message

Paul Scholes took aim at Michael Carrick on social media after Manchester United were beaten by Newcastle United on Wednesday night.

The Red Devils were beaten late on by the Magpies, despite having played against 10 men for the entirety of the second half.

Will Osula found the all-important difference with a sensational strike after Casemiro had cancelled out Anthony Gordon’s penalty in the first half.

The loss marks a first since Carrick returned to Man United on an interim basis following the sacking of Ruben Amorim.

Carrick is the favourite to take over Man United permanently, although Wednesday’s defeat may have slightly hurt his chances.

Man United fans fume at Paul Scholes

Despite a disappointing night on Wednesday, Man United remain in a strong position to qualify for the Champions League.

The Red Devils have jumped above Aston Villa into third on goal difference, and hold a three-point buffer to Chelsea and Liverpool.

Considering where they were before Carrick’s return, it has been a sensational turnaround led by the former midfielder.

Man United have beaten Man City, Arsenal and Tottenham since he was appointed, and they have a great chance to bounce back and take a huge step towards the Champions League when they play Villa next week.

Former Everton chief Keith Wyness exclusively told Football Insider that Carrick will take over at Man United if top four is secured.

But Scholes is not so convinced. In a now-deleted Instagram story, he wrote: “Michael has definitely got something special about him… cos Utd have been crap last four games… night. Tonali”.

Man United fans reacted angrily on social media, with one fan describing the former midfielder as a “keypad warrior” and a “failed pundit”.

Another said Scholes’ comments were an “absolute disgrace”, with many sharing a similar sentiment on the “bitter” post.

X user Callum wrote: “His first loss in eight games and Paul Scholes puts that. The lot of them are genuinely pathetic at this point.”

Michael Carrick must ignore outside noise

Despite Carrick and Scholes having played together for Man United, it is no surprise to see such a bitter comment.

Former Red Devils have been slammed repeatedly for their negative comments about their old club, which always appear to be pointed.

Yet Carrick will be keen to ignore the words from the likes of Scholes, who has a permanent managerial history consisting of a seven-game stint at Oldham Athletic, where he won one game before resigning.

His ex-teammate, however, may well be closing in on a permanent stay in the dugout at Old Trafford.
