Sources: Crystal Palace rejected in new deadline-day move to replace Marc Guehi
Crystal Palace are set to be frustrated in their move for defender Ruben Kluivert as Lyon do not want to sell before today’s transfer deadline, sources have told Football Insider.
The brother of Bournemouth winger Justin Kluivert, the 24-year-old has started Lyon‘s last four Ligue 1 games.
Football Insider revealed on transfer deadline day that Palace are working on a deal to sign Ethan Pinnock from Brentford, with decision-makers at Selhurst Park keen to bring in a centre-back.
Marc Guehi joined Man City earlier this month, after a deal worth around £20million was agreed between the clubs.
In other news, Palace youngster Jesurun Rak-Sakyi is set to join Stoke City on loan, after his time with Turkish club Rizespor was cut short.
Crystal Palace to miss out on Ruben Kluivert
Both Justin and Ruben, as well as the younger Shane, are the sons of legendary former Barcelona striker Patrick Kluivert.
Unlike his dad, the Lyon man is a strong defender, who joined the Ligue 1 club from Casa Pia last summer.
Ruben Kluivert Ligue 1 2025-26 Appearances 10 Goals 1 Assists 2 Tackles 9 Duels won 27
Kluivert came through at Utrecht, where he made 16 senior appearances before joining FC Dordrecht on a free transfer in 2023.
Casa Pia took the defender to the Portuguese top flight in the summer of 2024, and there he made a superb impression, attracting the interest of Lyon.
Kluivert has spent much of his first season in France on the bench, or by making very brief appearances off it, but he has emerged as a key player in recent weeks.
As a result, the Ligue 1 top three chasers have decided to keep the centre-back at the Groupama Stadium on deadline day.
Palace still looking for reinforcements
Sunday saw Palace mark a 12th consecutive game without victory across all competitions when they drew 1-1 with Nottingham Forest.
While, on the face of it, not a terrible result at the City Ground, Oliver Glasner would have been disappointed after the home side had a man sent off just before the break.
The Eagles have looked devoid of any confidence in the last two months, and the constant talk of departures is not helping the situation.
Jean-Philippe Mateta is likely to leave on transfer deadline day, and Palace will hope the arrival of fresh faces like Jorgen Strand Larsen will provide a boost.
