Medical booked for Rangers midfield exit as transfer rapidly approaches on deadline day - report

Rangers look set to get Joe Rothwell off their books before the transfer deadline.

While much of the focus is on potential incomings at Ibrox, the midfielder and Danilo are trying to secure exits from the Govan club before 11:00 pm GMT.

Rothwell has had an especially bad time in Scotland, making just 20 appearances since his move to Auchenhowie in the summer.

It seems as though the 31-year-old will finally leave the Gers after a medical was booked.

Who is set to take Rothwell off Rangers’ hands?

Danny Rohl‘s former rivals Sheffield United are set to win the race for Rothwell, according to a report from the Star.

The outlet claimed on 2 February that a move for the former Leeds United man is advancing rapidly ahead of the window closing.

It states that a medical is booked ahead of the potential exit for the veteran midfielder.

Where did it go wrong for Rothwell?

Rothwell arrived in Govan with a lot of expectation, after a remarkable campaign in the Championship with the 49ers Enterprises group’s other club.

Supporters were excited when he seemed to get the club, and his words after his signing were also encouraging for the fanbase.

However, his move north of the border has not worked out, mainly due to recurring injury issues that have hampered his ability to stay on the pitch regularly.

He was in and out of the side under Russell Martin, playing a prominent role at times, but dropping to the bench on occasion.

Since Rohl arrived as Martin’s successor, he has found minutes even harder to come by, as he does not fit in with the German’s tactical approach.

In fact, he has featured just three times under the ex-Sheffield Wednesday boss, with none of those coming in the Scottish Premiership.

Rothwell’s experience was touted as the thing that would take the Light Blues to another level, but it caught up with him instead, and he has been unable to make the required impact due to fitness issues and tactical reasons.

An exit is the right move for all parties, sometimes transfers just do not work out, and that is the case for the ex-Bournemouth man, who looks like his Gers career is over.
