Tottenham vs Atletico Madrid preview: Team news, lineups and prediction in Champions League

Tottenham Hotspur host Atletico Madrid in the second leg of the Champions League round of 16 on Wednesday.

The first leg at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano ended disastrously for Igor Tudor, with the Spaniards easing their way to a 5-2 win.

Although Spurs’ chances of qualifying for the quarter-finals are slim, they showed encouraging signs in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool.

However, Atletico Madrid have won five of their last six games in all competitions, and Diego Simeone will be licking his lips at the prospect of a favourable draw in the Champions League.

Head-to-head

Tottenham have won just three of their 16 meetings with Spanish sides in all European competition, with the first of those coming against Atletico Madrid, beating them 5-1 in the 1963 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup final.

On the other hand, the Spaniards have progressed from two of their three previous Champions League last-16 ties against English clubs, beating Liverpool in 2019-20 and Man United in 2021-22, while losing the other to Chelsea in 2020-21.

In the first leg, Simeone’s side played with extreme confidence, and they’ll be fancying their chances of going even further in the tournament.

However, Atletico Madrid must be wary, as they have only won two of their last 11 Champions League meetings with English clubs, which should give Tudor some optimism.

Team news and predicted lineups

Although Spurs still have eight players confirmed as injured, Micky van de Ven will return to the Tottenham team after serving his one-match suspension in the league.

Cristian Romero and Joao Palhinha should also be available after missing the last match due to concussion protocols.

Lucas Bergvall has also been involved in first-team training after a lengthy spell on the sidelines, which is brilliant news for Spurs fans.

As for Atletico Madrid, they are without Jan Oblak, Pablo Barrios and Rodrigo Mendoza, but the rest of their squad are fit to play in N17.

Tottenham predicted XI: Vicario; Porro, Danso, Van de Ven, Romero, Gray; Bissouma, Gallagher, Simons; Kolo Muani, Solanke

Atletico Madrid predicted XI: Musso; Pubill, Le Normand, Hancko, Ruggeri; Simeone, Llorente, Cardoso, Lookman; Griezmann, Alvarez

We say: Tottenham 2-2 Atletico Madrid

It seems the damage has been done in the first leg, and Spurs have very little chance of winning by three goals or more in N17.

However, Tottenham’s draw with Liverpool has given Tudor something to build on, and Spurs can take solace in the fact that they haven’t conceded at home in the Champions League this season.

However, Atletico Madrid will take some stopping, as they’ve scored 29 goals in nine Champions League games in 2025-26.

Ultimately, a draw looks to be the most likely scenario, with a 2-2 scoreline accurately reflecting how both teams might approach the match.
